So, with a lot of input from many members here, we decided to give my eldest a SAK Fieldmaster. I didn't see the point in a corkscrew for anyone under 21, and wanted a saw blade for him and this model turned out to be perfect for Grant.

I'd posted some pix in my original thread, but wanted to share them again. Hard to believe my kid is gonna be 10 on the 30th of Sept!

Within 4 hours of receiving his knew knife, he'd cut himself 4 times. I was trying to teach him how to safely use the knife, but he'd wander off and do something and come back for another band-aid. He didn't do anything too stupid, mostly the knife slipped, but he'll get used to it quick! I was quite proud of him as he didn't shed a single tear as he bled!

Awesome! That's about the age I was when I got my first knife which was a black Swiss Classic. I hope he can give it to his eldest one day! Buck and Victorinox should partner up as I use the case for my Buck X-tract to carry my Swisschamp.

75 now, son is 52.

Guaranteed to cut himself on first day with a new knife..stopped when he was 11 or so.

What are these Bandaids of which you speak. Cut on the hand too far away from the heart to kill you..usually.

Thanks for sharing..brought back some good memories. Your grandson is a fine-looking young man.

Best.

Congrats, that is a memorable moment for you both and one that he will remember for years to come.

I'm not a grandpa yet!! this is my boy, eldest of two sons.

While I know the bleeding will not kill him, I think band-aids have a psychological healing affect (or is it effect) on kids. Magical powers if you will.

Oh, and thank you, his is a handsome kid! Even better is that he is smart, kind, and caring.

His younger brother is going to be one to watch though!! He's a stinker!!!

He lost that case the very next day. partly my fault, but oh well.

I got mine at 5 years old. Still got the one big thumb scar from when I stupidly cut myself when I used the knife towards my body instead of away at the age of 6. I learned very quickly never to do that again.

My grandfather taught me, "whittle from the and never cut thee". I think Grant got the message, I hope so anyway!

I still remember my first knife, I probabily lost 2 dozen knives from the age of 5-15 (I still have a SAK I got for my 16th birthday so that bad habit stopped around then) I wish I still had several of those knives, some of them were actually pretty collectible.

I look forward to, but also dread the day I can give my son his first knife, not only will I have to split my knife budget between him and I but I'm sure, like his father he'll loose several nice ones while growing up.

The only knife I know I lost was a SAK Companion that my dad's uncles gave out as promo items back in the 70s and 80s w/their company logo on it. Still makes me mad. I may have lost my BSA Camillus, but my guess is that it is in my bedroom in a drawer, unless it was tossed out when our house caught on fire. I know I still have my 1980s hollow handle survival knife. that thing is a piece of work!!

I remember I gave my boy his first knife, it was a Benchmade. And his then girlfriend, now wife did not approve. And people can't figure out why I don't like her :))

My dad said, ”Cut towards your buddy, not your body.” Of course I still got a few bites growing up, but that's how you learn.

You may have condemned him to a life of buying countless, superfluous knives :) Great lookin boy!

That's cool! I gave my 12 year old nephew and old Buck 112 for his birthday last month and he just flipped out. The blade was worn to a knub so I replaced it with a blade from a Buck 482 and put deer antler scales on it. He recieved a bunch of toys and gadgets but it was obvious that the Buck was his favorite. I was also very serious with him about taking care of this knife and that it's not a screw driver or hammer.
