Gave the eldest his first knife this summer...

That's cool! I gave my 12 year old nephew and old Buck 112 for his birthday last month and he just flipped out. The blade was worn to a knub so I replaced it with a blade from a Buck 482 and put deer antler scales on it. He recieved a bunch of toys and gadgets but it was obvious that the Buck was his favorite. I was also very serious with him about taking care of this knife and that it's not a screw driver or hammer.

Very cool!

I'd picked up a 110 from a pawn shop that I thought I was going to give him, then I realized that the thing was HUGE!

My grandson is only 3 so he has a while to wait (truth be told...I'm the one not so patiently waiting. I got my first at around age 7, a three blade stockman of some kind. Both my daughters had one at 10, the oldest one now wields a 10" chef knife on a daily basis as a sous chef. Sadly, some boys will never know the pleasure of a good knife, and whittling, while sitting under a tree, in a society that now views a pocket knife as a weapon, rather than a tool, and an elementary school girl is suspended for bringing a butter knife to school with her jar of peanut butter and bread. .

I understand about the patience! I've got a 5 year old that I can't wait to give a knife too.

Yes, it is sad where a butter knife gets a kid a suspension. I remember hunting season where there'd be bloody trucks in the parking lot as some of the kids would get a deer before school and they'd still have their shotguns in the gun rack in the truck. Those days are gone!

Yup. It's a grandpa's responsibility to supply grandkids with their first pocket knife, shotgun and baseball glove. ;-)

The 110 is a big, heavy knife. It's cool to see kids with knives that actually respect them as a tool and not a toy. I think my first pocket knife was a little yellow imperial peanut. I still have it in my drawer-o-knives. It's a lot sharper now than it was back when I was a first grader. :)

The kid was looking at my Kershaw Leek today. He asked me why it didn't have more stuff. I think he's hooked on SAKs!

Well done on introducing you son to knives at an early age. Every cut on his hand is a lesson on what NOT to do with a knife. Gotta learn, and the best way is by doing. And what the hell, he's learning first aid techniques and the value of a well stocked first-aid kit!!

The first thing my father ever taught me when I was a kid was to "Always cut away from yourself." and that a dull knife is the most dangerous knife in the world.

Thanks to my father, I've been very fortunate with my fingers.

My dad gave me my first knife when I was about 7-8. It was a Vic Classic. He also gave me about 10 toothpicks that year as apparently they liked to go exploring without me.

The first day I had it, I used it to cut up some vegetables at the campsite against my dads better judgment. Nearly severed my pinky finger. That was a lot of blood. Ruined a lot of veggies too, I was too embarrassed to call attention to my cut. Haha.

I told him it would be years before he got another knife if he lost this one.

I gave my oldest a composite Leek blem that I had. He was 18 and just stared his part time job while in college. He used it at work but then I found out he lost it a few months ago. I wasn't very happy with him. He's the misplace, irresponsible type but always means well and doesn't get into trouble. I just gave him a CRKT knife that I got free ordering 3 VertX pants on a website...lol. I'll see how long that lasts. Won't care as much.
