Recommendation? Gayle Bradley 1 vs. Southard... (last knife purchase of the year :) )

i still have both under my roof, but my thought is the GB 1 is a much harder use knife and its M4 steel is hard to beat,if you can find one!hang on to it.

Peel ply carbon fiber would be idea

Yes! Peel ply cf would be my scale choice as well. Since this model has no real guard it would benefit from the added traction.
As for steel I'd say continue the trend of a tough tool steel but add a DLC coating. M4, Cruwear or 4V.

I own both knives and live in Ohio. For my personal preferences I like the GB1 better than the GB2 and the Southard. I only got the Southard because I was on a flipper kick and had to try it. I did not really care for the action. Most spyderco's flick as well as many flippers that I own. I have the GB1 in my regular carry rotation and it performs great. I like the M4 steel. I take care of it but I dont baby it either. The look and feel of the GB1 is what keeps it in my rotation. Very stout tool, but the CF makes it look classy too. I do wish it had a finger choil as most of my favorite knives do, I am always afraid I will forget that it does not have one and choke up on the grip like my military and PM2's. Guess I would only do it once....

Peel ply sounds good. I said micarta with bead blasted or unbuffed micarta in mind for grip. You can have whatever scales you want, just bring it! I'll take Cruwear, 3V, 4V or K390.

I think some people have stayed away from M4 for corrosion fears, which seem to be mostly unfounded (yes, some have sweat issues). But I live in a humid climate and it's been fine. The corrosion concerns would also make many not want a sprint in anything other than stainless, but I think that would take away from the spirit of the design.

I have a GB1. Very nice knife. I'll probably be accused of heresy for this, but I'd like to see a titanium or stainless steel framelock sprint GB1 in M390 or CPM20CV. Yes, I know the weight would increase, but I don't care and I'm pretty much over carbon fiber. Fewer parts, strong as all get out, easy in and out of a pocket, almost nothing to oil. Dream folder for me.

My Gb2 has one of the sexiest blade profiles in my collection. I would love to see a DLC version in M4.

Nothing wrong with dreaming! But that wouldn't be a sprint. It would be a new model.

Alrighty. Since this is turning into a GB1 sprint wish list, I am going to go with that. I'll either pick up a Southard from a dealer if they last much longer or keep an eye on the exchange for some strays. Thanks for the advice!

You won’t be sorry. The gb1 is a tank and has extremely tight tolerances. If you ever disassemble one you will understand. Hell of a knife.

I know the GB1 is a laminate. I just thought the texture on it was created via peel ply as well.

No, it's not. I think the Sage 5 is a peel ply laminate. I'd be fine with that. I just don't like the texture of the cf weave used on the GB1 and the Sage 1.
