Most of my axe work is splitting small/medium rounds for fireplace and firepit so the Gransfors Bruks Small Splitting Hatchet is perfect for me. It's got a 2 1/2 pound head, 2 1/2" face and 16" handle. Superb quality like all GB products.
The design is much like their larger splitting axes and mauls, so it powers though the wood. So far I've used it on well seasoned, but stubborn, chunks of knotted red oak as well as ash cut just this Spring. It's worked well on all the tough stuff and just blasts through kindling. It feels light enough for one hand use, but you can generate a LOT of power with a two hand swing!
It's compact and light enough to tote around, but I'll probably use it mostly at home, where it's got enough to keep it busy.
