Gear advice for deploying soldiers

I'm glad I bought my son a BM 710 in D2. He has been to Iraq once and is going back in July leaving behind my daughter and my grand-daughter.
He is a Sgt in the Marines amd does electronic repair. He mans the 50 caliber when they go on caravans. I can't imagine he would ever need a sword like knife. but it makes me feel better knowing he has a quality knife on him. Simon Butler, one of our premier frontiersman of the 1700's, always said that a weapon not within reach was worthless. So I feel good that my son has an excellent knife always clipped to his gear.

my best friend is back over there right now, going back he bought a box full of older small gerber LST's from some big lots place. these are the ones with the two inch blade, he intends to hand them out there to the men in his unit. He is a Navy Doc who was with the marines a lot. although usually not in the field, it was not totally uncommon for him to have to out to work on seriously damaged young men to get them to make it back to the base hospital. It was his opinion that a really good 2 inch pocket knife was going to be the most used knife over there.
