I am trying to decide between the two and i have had trouble finding pictures and comments on the GEC #16.
If anyone has the GEC canoe can you please post your opinions and pictures.

Thanks

I don't think too many of the guys have the new Canoe yet. 2Dead does and maybe he'll see this thread later today. I wish I had something for you. At least this post will bump your thread back to the top.

Yep, I have one but I haven't carried and used it so these are just superficial observations... The Canoe and WO are both single spring and the same length but the Canoe is slightly wider and thicker. The larger bolsters on the Canoe make it a little heavier. The spear blade is also broader on the Canoe. I'm not really a Canoe connoisseur as this is my first true Canoe so I can't really compare it to those of other makers. I do have a CSC Cannitler but its a different animal.

The springs on my version were the same like the WO. About a 4. Not a nail breaker for me.

I haven't seen any pics of the knife closed yet, so I was wondering if the blades in the GEC canoe completely sunk within the bolsters?

I don't have a closed pic but they they are not completely sunk. The pen is more sunken than the spear but you can still feel and see it sticking up. The spear blade definitely sticks out but not as much as their other patterns.

that's a shame, I thought that was the point of the raised bolsters, the main spear looks massive in proportion to the frame though, so I guess that is some compensation.

Wow is that #16 canoe beautiful..I had to google the #68 white owl and I prefer the looks of the #16 personally..I'm heading up to GEC this summer and something is coming home with me..Either a canoe or a barlow..CD

I've got a canoe on order. i wish I'd have thought to go ahead and get a White Owl at the same time...

Just be sure to browse the GEC store (via the links on their website) before heading up, or call ahead. The knives they have posted in their "Online Store" are exactly what they have on hand to sell-- not a comprehensive lineup

Look for their "Rendezvous" in the middle of July. They always have a Special Release Knife for the Rendezvous. You can meet other Collectors and tour the Factory. Of course you can tour Factory any day you go there if you get there before 2 P.M.

I just got a GEC Canoe in Buffalo Horn: I took a couple of "closed" pictures for your comparison.

It's a nice sized knife and feels good in the hand. Upon the forum's recommendation, I got the pen blade to try out. The bolsters don't cover up the edges of the blade. I'm kind of a newbie though. I like the knife.

I have a #16 Northfield Canoe Burnt Stag, a very pretty little knife, opens very easily and to be honest i have never carried or used it much so i can see it being traded or sold in the future. Coincidently i have just ordered a #68 Northfield White Owl Burnt Stag with a spear main blade but it will be a user with a tether clipped to the bail, cause with age has come Arthur Itis and i fumble and drop things more than i used to,so seeing the posts by Stich2442 with his "Owl" with tether i thought ah ha that will do for me, sorry i have not learnt how to post pictures yet as i do not speak or understand "computer english"...

I really wanted the Canoe until I got my White Owl. The slimness of the Owl is wonderful and it has been my favorite GEC to date. I think you will be very happy with either one.

Hi 2Dead you saying that the blade on the canoe is broader got me to thinking perhaps the blade being broader at the tip is to emulate the paddle in an actual canoe, at any rate it is that broadening of the tip that i found unpleasing in my canoe and combined with the soft opening is probably why i have never carried it, but looking at the excellent pictures posted by pertinux i can see the "owl" is going to be the perfect fit for me, although i dont know what my Pemberton or Dogleg Jack or Boys Knife or or heck i only have sixteen ( not counting the "owl" ) GECs and they all want pocket time, at the moment Pem is laughing cause he slips in my fob pocket without me noticing and to be honest there is not much in my everyday tasks that he is not up to, except food prep can get a bit messy with his tiny blade which is where the #48 comes in as a superb slicer...

The one pictured above has gotten quite a bit of use and has a patina. It's a good little knife that's for sure. I like the blade combo.

The White Owl is a bird I fancy, very desirable pattern.

The 16 is a much rarer bird it seems, not much talked about or owned here apparently. Why? There are a lot of interesting handle choices, the Northfields have ornate bolsters, but most seem to stay at the dealers as far as I can make out, odd. I'm not very keen on the Canoe as a pattern, too much bolster, so that's why I've never bought one. However, many people do enthuse over Canoes but they don't seem so struck on this rendering. Reasons??
