I recently bought the GEC 2011 Blade Forum knife. There are videos on it, forum discussions, etc. It seems wildly popular as a collectors piece. I called and spoke to the owner at GEC and he confirmed confirmed what the following owner had told me when asked what makes the knife unique:

1. This was the first GEC Bladeforums knife they produced
2. This was their first #85 patter (now very popular because of the easy open)
3. It's the first GEC caplifter run
-I'm not sure how many 85's have caplifters

Can anyone familiar with GEC's (I'm new to collecting them) tell my why this beautiful knife, designed by Blade Forum members, has changed hands so many times? All the reviews are very positive and it seems like this knife is famous. What am I missing? It's in perfect condition. Pic below (this is not taken by me) -

Moved to Traditionals, you will get better and more accurate information than you will in General Knife.

Any idea how I move it? Sorry, still relatively new here.
You are now viewing it in the Traditional Forum, thanks to the moderating powers of RevDevil!

Many times folks will purchase multiple knives and make a few bucks on passing on their extras.
Sometimes you have to sacrifice one to the exchange to fund something you like better, which is what happened to mine.
It's the nature of the beast and not specific to that particular knife. There are probably as many reasons as there are knife collectors.

Oh! and sometimes you need the cash because you have a baby on the way! Congratulations!

I sold mine because the caplifter was almost a 10 on the pull.
Awesome design though, and I hope we have more EO 85's in the future. Its been what 3 years since an 85 run??!!

Aha at first I was wondering who made this video but nice one Jake, gave me a good laugh. I wonder where Far East Movement went..been 3 years same as the 85's that they've been seen. :D

The 2011 BF knife was the only #85 to receive a cap lifter. I love mine. :D
Oh and hello from another Boston area member. :D

Hey man! So is there more than one 2011 BF 85 w/ a cap lifter? Geez, if so that's news to me!

Yeah, there were a bunch of them made. Can't remember the exact number. 140 comes to mind but I don't remember exactly.

Refer to item number 3 in your original post. "It was the first GEC cap lifter run"

Well don't I feel like an idiot. I paid a small fortune and unless you guys agree this is a great collectors piece, I got effed.

I guess it depends on how much you paid (I'm not asking) but they aren't the easiest knife to come by these days. Most folks that have them have either used them well or they aren't parting with them or both. Mint condition examples are getting harder and harder to find, although they are still out there.

This is a pre 1931 New York Knife Co. Hammer Brand that the #85 EO was patterned after by GEC. Pen blade instead of screwdriver/cap lifter blade

Thanks!

Welcome, don't forget that most everyone on the forum are knife nutters and probably have more knives than we can count on our toes and fingers. So for me as an example, sometimes I rotate out a particular pattern just to not have too many knives around. For instance I have now learned that I have a particular interest for half whittlers, two blade open ends and trappers.

But that isn't to say that next year, I won't need a barlow or to reexplore the merits of a stockman. Sometimes trading is just plain fun. And to be honest, there are some knives out there that you can't buy for all the money in the world as they are limited runs, so in some instances you might have to give up something nice in a swap in order to get the other knife that you desire.

I.E. right now there seems to be a shortage on wharncliffe's. It's darn hard to get a GEC Viper or Talon or a Hawthorne in the configuration that you want right now!!!

Appreciate the feedback. I'm new to GEC's having only strated buying/collecting them the last few months. I have some special ones. Mostly though, over the years, I've collected William Henry's, Chris Reeve, Klotzli, Spyderco's and rare Wenger/Victorinox. I'm learning the ropes of GEC's and selling off the majority of my original collection which consists of 70+ knives. I agree though, I like to trade and will certainly entertain one if it's a knife I really want. Currently after a Mammoth Fossil Terzuola that is costing me 4 expensive knives.
