GEC 2023 Journeyman Electrician Knife #53E323

Well, I was only planning on enjoying this one through the photos shared here on the Porch. Totally unexpected, and undeserved, a fellow member messaged me that he wanted to get one for me as a gift. He knows my affection for this kind of knife. He had a more personal motive as well, but let’s just say that it was a most generous act of friendship and generosity that touches me deeply.
Thank you, Greg @Leslie Tomville! I love it, Amigo!View attachment 2175131View attachment 2175132View attachment 2175133View attachment 2175134
I had the #86 Forum knife in my pocket, but I’ll compare it to my #54 Jack when I get home.
I think the double sheepsfoot blades may turn out to be a good call. I can see using one for rougher stuff, and keeping one sharp.
This is a great size for my hand, and the fit and finish is flawless. I tried taking a video clip so you could hear the utility blade snapping closed from the halfstop. Unfortunately, the audio did not load. But it has a most authoritative sound.
Also interesting is that the edge on the utility blade is quite sharp, with the proper high bevel. Much sharper than any TL-29 in my cigar box.
This is going to get used. 😃

Jeff, I was hoping you’d get one of these one way or another. I think you just had to have one. That’s a generous gift, Greg. Well done!

You can always turn one of those sheepfoot blades into a hawkbill with a little judicious grinding and a belt sander.

First impressions are:
1. These are very solid, large and well made knives.
2. Fit and finish is perfect on my 2 examples. Everything fits perfect. No movement, no gaps, bolsters look good.
3. Blades on mine are a little stiffer than I would like, especially on the locking main. The half stop on the main blade is definitely needed to slow closing after disengaging the lock so you don’t pinch your thumb. The lock on these is PERFECT! There is absolutely zero blade play on these 2. Not what I expect in a locking traditional.
4. The sheepsfoot blades feel nice, and do not have a half stop. This is a preference thing, but I prefer no half stop on these. Pull is lighter than the main on these two.
5. Not sure on the utility of the main blade. I prefer short sheepsfoot blades for stripping wires, and the flat head of the main blade will be nice, but it is pretty broad to fit smaller screws, like outlet or light switch covers. I’ll try it out on my next electrical chore though.

Overall, some “stout” knives here. Very well made.

Very cool, Jeff. I'll look forward to reading how it performs for you.
