Today after a wait of 16 days (not to bad), my much anticipated Magnum arrived and despite having to pay the equivalent of $32.28 in tax & handling to get hold of it, i am bowled over, it is purt near ideal as a reliever for the #09 Stag Esquire i have been carrying as my daily watch pocket knife that took over from the #09 Ebony Esquire that i found to smooth for my arthritic hands.
My dilemma is this, the beautiful Northfield #22 i have is a numbered 1 of 25, now should i use it OR get a Tidioute for daily carry, i do rather like the smooth buckhorn bone covers. On the other hand i have inbound a Spyderco Manbug !!! i think drink may have been involved.

That is a VERY pretty knife you have there. My inclination would be to use it .........a lot! Just think of all the satisfaction you will feel every time you slip it out of your watch pocket.

If I buy a knife and keep it, I use it. That's what they are made for anyway. I currently carry a 1 of less then 10 viper and don't think twice about it. I carry my Oeser custom all the time. If I had a Bose knife I would use the crap out of it. The more I spend the more I expect it to perform. You cant take your safe with you when you pass. Familys will rarely recoup the amount of money you put into your collection and I doubt most GEC's in particular will be very valuable as a collector piece for at least a decade or more. When ebay first came along everything went for so much money and then everyone dug out their old junk and started selling the same things they saw go for 1000 bucks. Now all of a sudden that 1000 dollar item is not as rare as everyone thought. We are a society of collectors now and for what? The hopes of someday it will be worth more money? I get more joy from using them then reselling them at a profit. Just my .02 about it.

I think GEC keeps all the number 1 knives, so it's a rare escapee.:D Very pretty little knife.

Best regards

Robin

Now that I look again, I have to ask: is it really a #1? I think all the numbered editions say "1 of X," whether they are the first OT 100th knife of that run. Your bolster looks like it says 16 or 10, or is that just a reflection? I suppose 1 of 25 is still fairly rare, but I'm a user. If it is a true #1, I might sell/trade it to a collector who would appreciate that, and then find another to use as a user. Just my thoughts.

I concur with the others - it was meant to be used. :)

Nice looking knife. I was debating in trying one too but haven't decided yet.

Thanks for sharing the pic! Joe

Are you thinking of selling it to someone at a later time? In that case, keep it pristine and unused in the tube, or on display but never used, carried, or sharpened.

If you bought it for use, but aren't willing to use a pretty knife, then you should have bought an ugly one in the first place. I believe the actual phrase for this is that "you can't have your cake and eat it, too."

That one, from the picture, is serial #10 out of the 25 produced.

Use it! The most joy you will get out of knife is to actually use it. :)

At least, that is how they are for me.

Thanks to all who have answered my question. I have always used every knife i have ever owned, not always often but my favourites go into my rotation box and get carried frequently albeit some more frequently than others. When i asked should i get a Tidioute version i had a little bet with myself that those who chose to respond would say "Get a Tidioute and use them both" to my suprise and my wallets delight not one mention of that course of action.
I apologize for the confusion regarding the number of the knife, i should have written "one of 25" it is number 10. Thanks again for the response ,confirming again what a great bunch of folk you all are...

Love those Autumn Gold scales! That's probably my favorite bone color from GEC. Blood Red is my other fav.

Wow, that Spyderco Manbug is ugly! I would definitely use this knife and hide the credit/debit cards while having a drink or two :)

Use it. Serial numbered ones aren't really a big deal necessarily. Besides, why buy a Ferrari and keep it in a garage?
:P

Funny thing oldmanrunning, I buy a $1K rifle and shoot the crap out of it, hunt in the rain, mud, etc. I buy a $30K car and drive the wheels off - but I buy a $100.00 knife and can't bear to mar it - doesn't' make sense - but I do it too! OH
Ps. Beautiful Knife!!
