GEC #25 Barlow Butterknives

Great job you did there on your 25 Mateo, I've got the same knife and it had the same issues. Did you take a little off the nose of the swedge? The proportions of this little spear just didn't work for me and I filed a bit off the top, and tapered the tip of the edge for more of a drop point profile and I'm really happy with it now. Of course I didn't do nearly as nice of a job as you did on sharpening the edge. Very nicely done.

Hey Jim,
Yes I took off a little of the hump to a more classic spear point design, it looks better to me this way and it is equally easy to pinch open. I did it with the diamond file of a leatherman charge.
Thank you for the comment about the sharpening, it begins to be near where I like, but in the next sharpening I'll take the grind down a little bit more.
As I said before too much work for a knife in the hundreds neighbourhood, non the less the handle is beautifully made and the hand and pocket worn it is taken is quite nice. (Much more yellow and orange now than in the first pic when new).

They did look at their final honing process a couple years ago and made some improvements. Looks like most of the complaints are on knives that pre-date that.

Interesting. My worst culprit is (was) a 2008. Upon close inspection, its secondary blade was sharpened roughly thus (quick sketch):

Meaning, the blade was thick and still *rounded*-- entirely unkissed by sharpening device-- where one might expect a bevel, with just the eensiest swipe of a grinding wheel creating the least edge on one side in particular, the other side just a little bit more. (My illustration is crude, but hopefully you get the idea.) I actually found it funny, how bad it was. This was on a Prototype, however; perhaps GEC thought the appearance of an edge would be sufficient? ;) Silly me, I use the thing.

I love the overall form of the spear blade on the #25s (the visual profile of the knife and opened blade), but for me it's the most cumbersome in use. I'd be very interested in seeing your modifications, though if you'd rather not publicly share your "not nearly as nice of a job," I understand.

I agree, that's a lot of work on a knife in this range, though maybe there are some who are satisfied with it out-of-box?

I'm glad to hear the stag is wearing nicely for you, at any rate. I think this calls for another picture with Tato.

All of my GECs are newer models. They all have been decently sharp. Not razor sharp, but as sharp as any production knife I've owned.

My filed down, and re-profiled 25. It's subtle, but it made a difference to me. Now it's more SAK than WTH.

Sorry, couldn't resist : )

Thanks so much for posting these pictures. It looks to me like you did a great job. You're a braver man than I. ;)

I think I can see the difference most in this first picture:

But shall continue to puzzle it out:

(I'm inadvertently holding my knife at different angle, so its original profile isn't as clearly seen in comparison with yours.)

I love this!

That is just TOO awesome!

Agreed! Thanks so much, guys. :D

My dog would think its a treat and be chewing on it! I didnt train her very well. I call her the "Mule". Most stubborn dog on the planet! 13 and going strong!

I did something similar with mine (since sold), along with thinning out the edge a good deal.

I've never really liked the exaggerated "paddle" shape of some of the GEC spears, and think they are much improved when slimmed down.

BTW, beautiful Golden there, SJ. :)
