GEC 2nd Cut Stag - What exactly is it?

I've got a GEC 33 Conductor pattern in 2nd cut stag. If it didn't say so on the label, I'd swear it was bone. It's hafted just like their bone, which is to say it has no irregular thickness to it, unlike the t'pick shown above. Will say it's a neat looking handle material and I like the mottled mix of brown, white, black, & cream colors.

Wow, thanks guys for all the pics and updates! I had no idea that stag could be worked into so many different looking handle pieces.

Biglmbass, that happens to be the knife I'm looking at - a #33 Conductor. Certainly from the pic on the dealer site it looked just like bone to me - very interesting that it looks like that in person also. I'm still on the fence on this one. I have three Conductors already and really like the pattern; not sure if I need another one or not, but that handle material intrigued me.

Sidenote: What a great place this is - ask a question and in a matter of a few hours, not only get great answers and pics but an education too.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting GEC's VP Ken Daniels at the Wannemacher Arms Show in Tulsa, OK. Asked him the difference between GEC's Genuine Stag and Burnt Stag and he told me the Genuine Stag was the outer bark. He showed me several of their stag knives and pointed out you could tell GEC's Genuine Stag knives as they don't have shields, they spend a lot of time picking / matching their stag and they don't want to cover it up. He said their Burnt Stag was as the name implied, portions that are embellished and burned to replicate the outer portion. Unfortunately he didn't have a model I was looking for on hand in Genuine Stag so I left without buying a GEC. I didn't specifically ask the difference between Burnt and Second Cut and noticed on a distributor's web site they also have Natural Stag, further muddying the waters.

A little help filling in the blanks................

Genuine Stag always comes on rolls (full horn cuts) and is processed completely at GEC. The "Genuine" is an indicator of the source, not the quality itself. It is genuine because they took it right off the round before assembly. No burning or other techniques are used for coloration or anything else. This Genuine Stag is not enhanced in any way other than Traditional preparation and hafting.

Burnt Stag is the typical stag slabs that the industry is accustomed. Burning as the last step of processing has been used for some time to normalize the coloring that may have been lightened due to buffing the stag down into lighter colored interior. They come into the factory as slabs and are only trimmed to fit.

Many times there are knives that are meant to be Burnt Stag, but just look too good to be torched. GEC has decided that when this occurs they will set them aside to be distributed as Natural Stag. These pieces are selected for color, even thickness, match and receive no further treatment other than the regular, sizing and hafting to a knife.

And Second Cut Stag has already been explained by Blues
