(sorry for wrong model# in title, cant edit it)

hey all, im kicking around the idea of picking up a GEC folder and found a couple i like but have nowhere to go handle them in person.

my question concerns the #'s 53 and 62 (Muskrat vs Courthouse Whittler), does the extra 1/2 in length of the #53 make it feel noticeably more bulky in the pocket compared to a 3 bladed #62?

thanks for the help.

I can compare the #73 to the #53 as I have no 6x other than #66s

the 53 is "long" but it's not too big to be carried in the front pocket or normal to cargo pants, maybe a suit could represent a problem but imo, it would for most knives
carried the #53 is some slim pants last summer, carried it vertically next to the wallet in the front right pocket, no problem, after 1-2 days it disappeared

but mine is a #53 stockman 2011

not sure about the muskrat but I doubt it's bulkier (clip blades btw?)

the #73 carried well in all variants or materials, it's a little shorter but you don't notice it so much, maybe the 53 carries well as it's symmetrical and rounded so it moves right around the pocket?

Hey Mad Maxx! I recognize those pix! "used with permission" That Bumble Bee is NICE!

pics after lunch.

My #61 four blade congress carries as well as a 3.5" case stockman. Both the #61 and the case stockman are my typical office knives when in dress or kaki pants. Of the #5x stockman/muskrat, I don't notice much difference between the two. I prefer the stockman to the muskrat, since i'm a fan of sheepsfoot blades. I typically carry the #5x cigars and case trappers when in jeans.

Hope this helps,

Mark

I don't have a #62 Courthouse Whittler but I do have a #53 Muskrat. I can't say for sure but the #53 seems like a much larger knife. I would think that the #53 would be quite a bit bulkier in the pocket than the #62.

I can only speak for the #53 but in my opinion, it does feel somewhat bulky in the pocket.

I think the answer to your question just might be yes.

I'd say yes, the #53 is bulkier. Besides being longer its also thicker. The blade stock is thicker and there is a center liner (I assume, I only have #53 Cuban Stockman and Furtaker Trappers). Here are two pics I took to show different sizes of a few knives. Case Swayback Jack, GEC #33 Conductor, #61 Half Congress, #62 Courthouse Whittler, and #53 Cuban Stockman.

thanks for the pics 2Dead, that really helps a lot.

whats the blade thickness difference between the 1/2 Congress and the CHW?

I don't have a comparison pic of the blades and I don't have them available atm for a direct comparison. From memory, the #61's blades are actually ground so the blades can clear each other as both blades share the same spring. The #62's main blade starts out thicker as it sits on both springs but it tapers to fit between the 2 opposite blades.

Trand's pix show it well. Even small differences in handle length or width can impact greatly on 'pocket-convenience' In the Trad world, half an inch is a lot.

Regards, Will

the PO's records show it as delivered but it never arrived at my house,.. im kinda fumin' atm :grumpy:
