You'll get more bites on this thread if you repost over in the Traditional forum.
I have not had a #56, but the other GECs I've had have been fantastic. I would rate them ahead of Case (which are also excellent) and as one of the best production traditional slipjoint manufacturers.
Reposting ust makes 2 threads with one still in the wrong place. Better to Report Post -- the small triangle in the lower left of the post -- and a mod can move it.
I got a report from another member and just moved this to Traditional.
I have a Gec dogleg jack in frontier bone and I really like it.
I carries well tho it is a little heavier than I thought it would be. I guess that is the price you pay for it being built so solid. The handle is hand filling and it is a comfortable knife to use. Mine is perfect I guess, at least I can't find a flaw with it. Mine has carbon steel blades and takes a nice edge and holds it well. I feel like it is worth what I payed for it.

I have two with very good fit and finish. They do stay in their tubes because the pull is harder than I want in a slipjoint. I've just been too lazy to put them up on the exchange.
Tomsch, have you tried flushing the joints with a light oil and opening and closing many, many times? My GEC went from a 9 (on a scale of 1-10) to about a 6 or 7 after a couple evenings doing this watching tv.
I like the way it fits my hand. I like the angle of the blade. Springs on mine are harder than I like and it doesn't get carried as much as it should. Everything else is excellent. Now be advised that I don't like hard springs. If Victorinox is a 5, then I like a 4. And this one is about a 7. So it might be just fine for someone else.
I should add that my dogleg had VERY strong backsprings when I first got it but after a few days of use and a little mineral oil they are perfect. Strong but smooth, but not nail breaker strong.

I have had two of the #56 doglegs and I think they are a wonderful knife.
The frame really molds to the hand and makes it feel as though it's designed for tough cutting.
It's a great four finger knife and carries well in my watch pocket, I carry a lot bigger knives than it though, so weight doesn't bother me.
I like the Dogleg quite well, it is actually the first GEC I purchased. As others have stated the pull is a little stronger than some other GECs but mine is nowhere near a nailbreaker.
Here is a 56 pictured along side some other GECs for size reference (sorry for the poor picture quality)
I am with Frank on what I prefer in pull strength, so that may keep me away from the 56, but I have to admit I have been wanting one for quite a while. The size, the frame shape, clip master, all appeal to me. If the spring was not so heavy and the pen was in front of the clip it would probably be the ideal pocket knife for me.
If I ever found a coconut palm handled one like this one of Dan's, all my reservations would fly out the window, and I would buy it in a heartbeat!
I literally spent an hour or more last night searching the internet for a #56 with wood handles and spear point.
If anyone knows of a real dealer who actually has these things in stock, I'd appreciate a PM.
