I have yet to see any sort of comprehensive review of this knife on the internet, so if you excuse my quick and dirty iPad photos, I will give you my impressions.
I love this knife.
The name is perfect. Not only is it a maverick in that it is, as far as I can tell, the world's first congress stockman, but if you take into account a certain fictional gambler played by James Garner, it is a gentleman cowboy knife.
Here it is in comparison to the 66 Calf Roper:

As you can see, the blade length to handle ratio is better on the calf roper, but for me, the Maverick feels better in the hand as well as the pocket. I don't even notice it in my right front pocket. It's light and stays upright next to my front pocket wallet. In addition, the sheepsfoot blade is not uncomfortable at all in the handle while using the other blades. On the calf roper, the sheepsfoot definitely sticks out enough to cause some discomfort and change of grip.

I think it is rather unfortunate that this knife was released practically days before the Outlaw Jack, as that is the knife that will undoubtedly steal the spotlight. This 62 Maverick might be relegated to cult status for those who do buy and love it, and an object of curiosity for those it leaves cold.

Me? I'm very glad I took a chance on it.

Thank you for looking.

Andrew

It's a beautiful knife. I just have one question, about how thick are the blades?

Thanks.

Without precise measurement, the clip blade of the Maverick, while shorter than the clip of the Calf Roper, is about the same thickness. The sheepsfoot and pen blades are quite thin. I don't have calipers, otherwise I'd be happy to give you a more precise measurement. The clip blade is definitely "beefy" at the spine.

Thank you for the comparison!
When I saw the first few photos on GEC's site I thought they were making a congress jack, but with a clip. I really like the 62 frame of my whittler, and looked forward to a jack pattern. Later when I realized it was a stockman I wasn't so sure.
I'm still on the fence about the Maverick, though you have convinced me I need a 66 Northfield Calf Roper :D If there are any blue corduroy Maverick's left after I pay for an Outlaw Jack and the Calf Roper then it will be the next knife on my list.

Beautiful knife and I am so glad you started this thread! I used to carry only congress pattern knives then fell in love with my current edc, Case humpback stockman, so this seems to be an amazing go-between. I am definitely going to purchase a 62 in ebony wood and make that my new EDC.

Thanks Again.

Glad to hear it, 67nick. Looking forward to your review when you get it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Nice write up and comparison photos! ...especially good to see comparison photos of the well! I don't recall noticing it previously but the straight edge blade looks like a Wharncliffe. I suspect that is one reason it sits a bit lower than the sheepfoot on the Calf Roper. The main blade still looks small to me but I do like the relatively long straight edge blade... some of the old cattle knives had super long sheepfoot blades whereas the sheepfoot blades on many of the modern stock knives are much shorter relative to the main blade. I would have left off the blade etch on these knives --the maverick should be unbranded. ;) It's certainly an interesting union of a handle die and combination of blades.

I quite like it, might soon have one myself. I'm guessing the clip is short relative to the frame, because a longer clip has too much belly and would stick out at the end of the knife, because of the curve of the frame?

I absolutly love my 66, the main blade is perfect. I wanted to try the bigger frame so much, but that clip is just not gonna do it for me. It is a very interesting pattern, but it doesnt suit my uses. Thank you for the great comparison pics, it is much appreciated.

Nice review, very simple and straight forward.IMHO I feel that the #62 Maverick isn't just some thrown together pattern. It looks as if the selection of blades it features were carefully chosen from years of experience. Also I would have never picked the #62 to have such an arsenal of blades, but I like it. As far as handle materials go I'm digging the corduroy acrylic (haven't noticed it before, but have always been fond of almost any acrylic really).

My enthusiasm for this knife is actually growing everyday. I can easily call it my favorite current production knife.

Its a great thing when you find that one that is just right. How many flavors are you going to get, thats the real question :D

This one keeps pulling me back in. I want to hate it for the size of the clip but for some reason I want one......

I nearly ordered the knife just because there are so many with really nice stag covers. Don't look at the stag knives or you might not be able to resist... ;)

I have one in the autumn clawed bone. It is a really nice knife. Now, admittedly I am in a work environment, but the blade selection is perfect, clip, wharncliffish-sheepfoot, and pen. I like the swayback (?) style. The clip is not that small, about what you would get on a #66. It is slim and rides well in the pocket. In all, it is a great office knife (for me)...

Anybody else pick one of these up got pictures to share? Anyone have a 62 whittler for comparison pics? This is really growing on me. I am actually thinking about getting one of these over the outlaw.
