GEC 62 Maverick = I love this knife

Thank you for the comparison!
When I saw the first few photos on GEC's site I thought they were making a congress jack, but with a clip. I really like the 62 frame of my whittler, and looked forward to a jack pattern. Later when I realized it was a stockman I wasn't so sure.
I'm still on the fence about the Maverick, though you have convinced me I need a 66 Northfield Calf Roper :D If there are any blue corduroy Maverick's left after I pay for an Outlaw Jack and the Calf Roper then it will be the next knife on my list.

GEC also made a #66 Jack, though they are getting harder to find. Same seprentine frame, Clip main, pen secondary ... very nice, and never has gotten the press it deserves, IMO.

Anybody else pick one of these up got pictures to share? Anyone have a 62 whittler for comparison pics? This is really growing on me. I am actually thinking about getting one of these over the outlaw.

Personal preference, of course, but I still think I favor the Courthouse Whittlers ...

I got one in primitive bone: scales are about medium for character/color, and pretty nicely matched.
I wish they had used the NORTHFIELD banner shield, centered, rather than the offset UN-X-LD, but they didn't.

Not sure why they left the clip main short, but at least they used a nice extension spring to fill the gap. No rubs.

It does have the proper long pull behind the swedge, and a nice pen instead of the spey. Nice knife.

Nice shots guys. Hoping someone has both to put them together for me but no biggie as my mind is made up to get one anyway(that last pic was the game over :D ).

In the other Maverick thread as it pertains to the spring extension vs blade length. Someone raised the point that they might not have any belly left in the clip if you brought it anymore forward? Not having one in hand, I can not comment for sure but it makes sense anyway.

They left it that short to keep the point inside the frame without the edge hitting the backspring.

That's the disadvantage of the congress frame.

Mighty fine pictures sir, any comments as to which you like more? Likes dislikes? pro's & con's to either?

Jeff and Jack, makes sense about the length of the clip. It would be cool if they made a Wharncliffe master (could be full length) and replaced the sheepfoot with a 3/4 size clip blade, keeping the pen.

I am onboard as well. To me it makes sense for GEC to make variations with blades. Keeps interest in the pattern. Only so many patterns, think they are doing pretty well re-inventing the wheel right now.

Well, I've only had the Maverick for a couple of days, and I've had the Courthouse Whittler for several months. That said, I find the grind on the clip blade of the Maverick kinda funky. It has to be that way to fit the blade in the congress frame, but it puts the edge at a strange angle compared to the wharncliffe master of the CHW. I'm still trying to get used to it. The pull is very light on the secondary blades, which is rather refreshing after some of the nailbreakers I've gotten from them. I've been trying to retain the original edge angle on the Maverick for general utility use, whereas the CHW got lowered considerably as a dedicated whittling knife. Basically, the jury is still out, but I like it so far.

Nice comparison shots and that is one beautiful Primbone ! … Now ya got me wanting one …. the full size sheepsfoot makes it a much different knife - looks and capability-wise.

Thanks for the pics!

That would be sweet!
I would like to see more of the 3/4 clip as well … the Geppetto Whittler has one (actually more like a half-clip), on a reverse 56 dogleg frame (GEC calls it a 57), along with a small coping blade … not as slender and not quite as long as the 62's, (3.5" vs. 3.75"), it is very solid and a nice departure ...

Hear, hear. As seen in Jack's photos, that shield seems to be the perfect match for this frame.

Very nice pictures Jeff!

Your pictures with this comparison along with Subspaces pictures and thoughts really help convey this knife very well. GEC needs to start kicking comission down to some here for selling their knives for them :D

Just got mine a little while ago. Its different for sure. The sheepsfoot doesnt bother me too bad in hand. I will have to use it a bit and give it a chance. As you can see from the pics, the main blades are almost identical, the angles in the pics might show it off more then it is. Maybe the 66 is a 1/16th bigger, maybe.

excuss the poor cell phone quality. Will take some pics of the knife itself tomorrow with the good camera.

These are great looking knives. I have to wonder why they did NOT put an extension spring on the gunstock??

It's a beautiful knife. I just have one question, about how thick are the blades?

Thanks.

Late reply to a 4 yr old post: In reply to question, how thick are the blades of the #62 Maverick:

Main (clip) on mine is .086, length 2 3/8"

Wharncliffe (or "sheep/wharn") is .051, length 2 1/8"

Pen .045", length 1 5/8"

I'll add, this makes a really unusually good wood carving knife for a stockman. The shortness of the main blade compared to the handle length means it is not as unwieldy as the longer blades found on most stockmans (stockmen?). I ground all blades to a lower bevel, found the main (clip) to be great for a roughing out blade when beginning a carving project. I believe someone mentioned its slightly unusual angle: yes, sits at its own forward angle, sort of "hawkbillish" if that's a word.
If only the pen was about 1/4 " longer it would be perfect. But I'm just partial to my own choice of blade shapes. For not being marketed or even mentioned as a carver, it is a great one.
Thanks, hope this helps someone evaluating a really good folder.
The Dude abides.
