GEC #72 Cody Scout Jack

Well, Sam, so it has halfstop, thanks. Sheesh, I am really not paying attention to the details today. I better take a nap :-p

Kevin, we still haven't heard from anyone who has handled one. Sam just gleaned half-stops from photographs.

Bob, have you checked one out yet? Half-stops or smooth?

I only ordered Hoofpicks. They have Half Stops. Lots of 73 Jacks still in stock at most Distributors.

Just the other day two horses ran over from my neighbors, she said if you want one its free but you have to take both together :-p

I grew up with horses, and Bob is correct imho, horse people (myself not included) are usually well off and large in numbers. I'm actually more in horse country than farm country :)

Careful! A lack of attention to detail could prove costly. Horses don't come cheap!;)

I don't know where you live, but outside the City Limits, Horse People are a specific, but by no means SMALL crowd. And they are a crowd of means. GEC has previousley done at least one "Factory Test Run" of the Hoofpick Equestrian Trappers with very good success.

Put a hoofpick on a Lady Leg!

(I'm enjoying your insights into some very focused purchasing groups. :))

I just posted this in the what do you have on order thread but figure it'll be useful here too. The #72 is great for someone who wants a stouter jack. Blade pull is about a 6-7 on both with great snap open, closed and to half stop. I have no complaints for this one but I think I'd like a #73EC jack instead. I kinda like the #73's drop point profile better and I've learned I prefer the look of end caps. The bull nose blade is kind of an in between of the drop point and spey blades. Very nice ebony on this one too.

Agreed on the profiles, Trand. The bullnose instead of the drop point is what's keeping me from jumping in on this one.
I already have the whole collection of the '08 & '09 #73 jacks, with the same edge profile as this one, although a spey.

It would be fantastic to see an extension spring for the pen blade on these jacks, too. I won't hold my breath, though.

My main thought behind starting the thread was to bring it to the attention of people like me who missed the boat the first time round. Agreed, I'd rather have a drop point main too, I don't mind the Bullnose blade but wish it was a bit pointier. I'm banking on being able to use the pen blade for finer detail work.

Thanks for the pic's Trand, the main looks a bit pointier the than the Bullnose... Maybe wishful thinking....:)

Just my luck if GEC bring out another run of #73's now!

I understand Jeff. I was thinking the same thing although I've only got the Bocote and Blue Denim from those runs. Do you have one of the Cripple Creek Jacks? Same set up in 420 with match striker nail nicks.

Trand, I passed on the CCs because of the 420 steel. I wouldn't mind having a nice stag CC, but I never found one for sale with the popcorn like your pic.

That one is a right handed model... flat popcorn on the mark side, palm swell on the pile side (not popcorn though)

Well, mine arrived yesterday and I'm mighty pleased with it:)

I thought I'd post a comparison pic....

As speculated the blade is identical to the Bullnose and the frame is pretty much identical to the #72 lockback.

I picked mine up to fill a work knife role and i'm expecting it to do that admirably. The blades have a nice strong snap which I think a work knife should! Besides being useful in itself the extra pen blade adds width and heft to the knife along with the canvas micarta scales which give it toughness too. Totally irrational but somehow in my head heft = strength! I prefer the shape if the #72/3 frame to the Bullnose because the extra depth in the handle offers more grip in various positions. I find the Bullnose a touch narrow in the middle.

Pretty flawless as we're coming to expect from GEC these days, if I was picky the spring sits a hair high when the blade is open and the grinds were pretty poor. I've got the grinds where I want them and I'm not worried about the spring, it's going to be working after all!

Obligatory glamour shot, this will be the prettiest this knife will look! I'm looking forward to seeing how this knife holds up with occasional TLC courtesy of Kevin and Andi's maintenance thread:)

Very nice write up! Thanks for that, Sam. Seeing your photos I really can see the frame being 72 and NOT 73. Might fine looking work knife you have there and I think that pen blade will earn your respect :)

Agree, great pics and write up!! I'm happy to see GEC using canvas micarta more. It'll make a great user.

Thanks folks, agreed ED, that's one pretty example.

Can I borrow it to pick out the hooves of the 25 horses and ponies at my fathers riding stables....?;)
