GEC 82 vs 92

I chose the Dixie Stockman, sold a 92 Talon.

I’ll muddy the waters by suggesting that a 66 Calf Roper would also be an excellent choice. My old Calf Roper basically blocked the Dixie Stockman and some others from being carried much - I gave it away and so far have forced myself not to get another one. IMO, they’re that good.
I like the calf roper as well. I just can’t seem to find a variant I like for retail at the moment.

The Eureka (proper two blade version) is far and away my favorite knife. To me, it is the perfect blend of aesthetics and function.

The 82 is a fine knife in it's own right too. I can't blame anyone for loving that knife.

However, I'm going to have to recommend the 92 mainly for one reason. If you want a Eureka, or think you're going to want one soon...get it now. Besides the ~$400 Case/Bose, this is the only one you can find on store shelves. Before this run, they were a pretty tough find.

I was actually just in the same boat as you. I couldn't make up my mind and was leaning more towards an 82 skinner, but in the end changed my mind for a 3rd time and went with a dixie stockman in elderberry. I couldn't get over that deep red and I know I'll put some use to having that extra drop point.

Sabercat Sabercat is my friend, but "proper 2 blade 92", them there is fighting words.....just kidding.

This whole discussion illustrates how everyone has a different opinion on what they like and how they like it. The saying goes something like this, "There Is a knife for every hand." They way I take this is, there is one that your hand, your style and your using techniques will prefer. We all have our own preferences and that's why there are so many patterns.

Sabercat likes a two blade, I prefer the spear point talon single. Others prefer the 82 stockman and others the skinner.

Here is another good example of preference. The 56 and 57 pattern are the same, but the main blades are placed on opposite ends. I personally don't care for a 56 as the serpentine bend is abrupt and away from the palm, while the 57 raises into my palm and is a favorite pattern of mine.

Not being able to try these knives in hand causes a lot of buying and reselling due to buyers regret . But it is the nature of this disease we currently have . Knife nuts we are.

In the past, I have sent knives to members wanting to try them out in hand, since there isn't a store to walk into to do so. Contact me offline and we can discuss if this might work. I usually only send user knives and have been willing to help and take the risk that someone runs off with my knife in the past. I see it sort of my way of giving back to the porch. In this situation, I have all iterations that you are interested in, but they are NIT. I'm a little hesitant at mailing all these to you to try without some assurance they will return. Contact me and we can discuss. I want you to get the pattern and combination that you will like the best. The knife that fits YOUR hand.

I just saw this. Sorry brother. Life has been hectic. I got T boned on Saturday and had other stuff happen before that. I appreciate the though, but I bought a 92! Haha. I love it, honestly. Softened the blow of the car accident figuratively. It fits my hand well. I also had a side venture come through and bought a second knife which was just a CV Case Texas Jack. I love that one as well.

Sounds good. If later you'd like to see what an 82 feels like, just reach out. Enjoy that 92.

...

I do like the 92 pattern. GEC’s execution is close to perfection. It is relatively slim. The handle is strangely ergonomic and the combination of that spear and the coping blade is brilliant...

I agree. It's really counter intuitive that the handle shape feels as comfortable as it does.

Mine is Smooth Ivory Bone and I like it a lot.

Ed, I remember seeing that smooth white bone closer to its conception date. Love to see how well that bone has aged over the years if you get a chance.
