GEC #99 Wall Street and Blade Play

Excuse me sir, but sitting around jiggling my knives ranks #2 on the leaderboard for reasons why I enjoy this hobby. #1 is that look my wife gives me when I look out the window for the USPS guy. And if you are curious, #3 is when I get to use a knife to open up the plastic wrap on a small flat rate box from Mike containing a new knife.
You know being second just means you failed/Lost :p :D

Looks like the mailman had the wind at his back and my 99ner is arriving a day early :D  The next best thing to getting a new blade is reading this lol

I don’t have a 99, and it’s partially because I have two 83’s. You see one has significant vertical play, the other a touch if side to side play. The side play is not particularly noticeable in use and doesn’t bother me. The vertical play does. It’s enough that it rattles with a shake and moves noticeabley in use. The lock has never failed but it does not inspire confidence and I would assume that play will lead to premature wear on the lock. So knowing how inconsistent GEC is with their lockbacks keeps me away from them. I have a couple of case lockbacks that only have any movement when excessive force is applied when cutting through something heavy duty. And no play in any other direction. A couple other brands that exhibit zero play. I love GEC slipjoints but I’d have to handle a lockback from them before buying and that’s not a possibility here.

That’s a good point since they sold out they probably won’t have one to exchange so will probably just offer you a refund .
Looks like that will be the case for me. They have no others, so they will give me a refund.
Just to be clear, this isn’t something that shows up only when a lot of force is used. I noticed it immediately when I opened the knife. Hopefully yours is perfect when you get it. Maybe I just got a lemon.

Thanks and sorry to hear that :(
As far as when mine arrives I’m ok with a little lock rock . I’ve had a few 72’s and have learned to except it . Some had it and some didn’t . My knives traditional that is don’t get any hard use . Just envelopes maybe a little light Whittling and mostly admiring lol. Any hard use I’ll grab a fixed blade or a stout Tactical folder

You did the right thing, don't accept defective goods. There are plenty of less exclusive lockback knives w/o blade play. Wonder what happens to the knife you sent back.

Depends on the dealer but someone might get picked out a real nice one

I wonder that, too. I saw a cheap Buck Solo at the store yesterday for $10 and bought it. Perfect centering and no blade play at all. Pretty good for a $10 knife.

In a similar situation, I was in Country Knives in Intercourse PA; they had a Queen Mtn Man in birdseye maple/D2 with some fit/finish problems. It was the last one. I offered less money because it had a good edge and was stable, but he said it needed to go back to Queen so they could see what had escaped and refund him. He wouldn't sell.

That’s not good. At least they will get it sorted out. The 99 I bought is boxed back up and will go back tomorrow. I am glad others got theirs with no problems. I got the email from DLT today saying they had 99s available and just deleted it. I’ll stay away from this type of knife by GEC from now on. I have plenty of other knives, so not getting or of those isn’t a big deal to me. My 14s and 81 have all been great.

The 99 that I was waiting on in post #23 showed up today and it really did have the "surprisingly solid" lockup that the auction site seller claimed. Just about perfect action.

Not to mention that it's a really good looking knife.

Also, I was super happy to type "440c" for the first time into the blade steel box on my knife log spreadsheet after typing "1095" so many times.

Glad you got a good one that you are happy with. That’s what it’s all about.

A knife log spreadsheet? I chuckled at first, but here I am thinking about starting my own. o_O

CDA7C2C8-D9A4-4CEB-94FD-5AFF9B8DA1A7.jpeg Out of my F&F 99’s one Nifebright is rock solid and the other two a very slight up and down.

I’m pretty sure the Triad lock patent expires soon, I am sure GEC could fix the problem with that.
