GEC and Jigging

Barrett… I bet the fav is on the un-x-ld
:p:thumbsup::thumbsup:

In the case of those two #77’s that’s a pretty safe bet. 😉 But even though the jigging and color (Pine Green, I believe it was called) on that Tidioute are less than stellar, it’s still a good knife that I find myself carrying fairly often.

I hadn’t thought about those purple #74’s and the matching #47’s. I remember the reception for that jigging being lukewarm, but I thought it looked pretty good.

I am of the mind that GEC's jigged bone is far from one of their strong suits - which begs the question, why are they so secretive regarding their process?

That said, they have plenty of hits amongst the misses - here are a few examples of their jigged that I like.

I feel that GEC can be consistently good at their more irregular jigging patterns too.

Here are a few with jigging that I do not find particularly pleasing. The bone on the recent 74/47 runs looks like tire treads. Obviously, it doesn't deter me much as I use the knife quite a bit and I like the bone color. The 82 is also a regular carry for me but when I first got it, the bone was very splintery - pocket wear has smoothed it out quite a bit though and that color is deep and pleasing despite the jig pattern not being all that grand. The 97 is shallow, bland, and boring overall - not a lot going on there. I had one of the Blue Pembertons but I gifted it awhile back - the jigging on that was very lackluster as well.

"Aren’t the differences in jigging from being “handmade”, hence the claim to fame and fortune (high prices n exclusivity)?"

Jakemex; Hand made or hand jigging is no excuse for poor jigging. I tend to think that it's more that they jig a large batch and even if it comes out less than expected it is simply not cost effective to scrap it. Also, I am not sure that the final result is apparent until it is dyed, installed and final shaped / polished. Hence; maybe they should stick to what works or ie well received.

Here I’d like to add that GEC is not in my consideration, for those reasons you stated, as worthy of all the hype and excessive secondary pricing.
