I only have GEC knives in 1095 so I don't have an opinion on their stainless or 01 yet.

Like some of the others I haven't tried their 440c because they have not made anything with it that I really like enough to use. I wished they would make more patterns with 440c.

I have bought a few patterns that were "close" to what I wanted, because they do such a great job with there 440C. Their heat treat and nice thin blade grinds really bring out the best in this steel.

I have tried their 1095 and it seems to preform well. Have any of you had problems with their 1095 rusting? I have had a few spots of red rust show up on mine but it is real humid here in KY.

I have bought many patterns in 1095, because I loved the patterns/materials, but wish some of them were of 440C blades. I live in NC, and like you have experienced pepper spots and small pits in my 1095 blades. I just accept this as part of the territory.

this thread had a bunch of replies on the same subject ;) whether GEC does or doesn't offer more 440C won't really effect how many knives I purchase, but it would make me a much happier camper to have the option of a few more patterns in their 440C...

I dont mind stainless but I would really like something a bit more substantial than 440C. While adequate I think that 154-CM or ATS-34 would be a better choice even at a higher price point.

I agree I like 154cm really well but 440c would be fine if they offered it in more patterns.

That would be my preference too. My favorite blade steel is CPM 154, but I don't see that much in production knives. Since they already use 440C I'd be happy with that. It's a fine steel when heat treated properly.

I tried both 1095 and 440C, and I think they do a good job on both. But, as a general rule, I prefer stainless steels, so my vote goes to 440C.
I'd like to try their O1 someday, and see how it goes. Unfortunately, it seems that GEC's choices on the "steel for pattern" thing tend to get quite far from my wishes :p

I voted 440C. I know I'm in the minority. I just prefer decent stainless steel on all my knives, with the exception of forged fixed blades. I'd buy more GEC knives if they offered more with 440C.

Great minds think alike.

Neither. Their 1095 is great, (I do not have anything in 440c); but I prefer the 01. I would not buy a GEC in stainless, just doesn't seem right.

Well...I think I have room in my box for a 440C GEC. I will look for one. I know that it can be very good steel. I started my knife obsession with one hand opening knives and CPM 154 is pretty much ubiquitous as is 154 CM and ATS-34, D2, M4, S30V, etc. And a lot of those knives are priced along the same lines as a nice slipjoint and they use much more material.
