GEC Calf Roper?

The #66 frame is my favorite from GEC, so much so I got one of each pattern, Calf Roper, Moose, Jack, and Muskrat.
Here's my Calf Roper in cocobolo:

The Moose may get slightly more carry, but the Calf Roper is one of my favorite stockman style knives.

I've already posted my Moose and Jack a lot but not many of the the Muskrat in stag.

I love that red bone Tidioute ~P, it's awesome!

Cheers.

I really love the combination of the cocobolo with the pinched and slanted bolsters and the cloud shield! Probably my favorite version of the Calf Roper actually and if I ever find a good deal on one I wouldn't be able to pass it up. :) I passed one up on the exchange a while back and I've never forgotten about it lol.

So...which one has more heft to it, the Calf Roper or the Moose? I recently held a White Owl and I found it too small...way too thin and light.

^^^ Very Nice Barry! I assume this is your keeper as I do not see it up for sale on your site. The green brother of Sarah's red licorice #66 Stockman. Very nice...

The green that turned Pertinux green (and does still, I mean, just look at it!), but which led to the eventual discovery of the vibrant red with the same striking shield. ;)

I know this is an older thread, but I was hoping one of you could do me a favor. Could someone post a picture of a Case medium Stockman (like the #6318 or 63032) next to the Calf Roper? Or even just share your thoughts on the two, I'm particularly interested in the size and weight differences. I really like the medium stockman pattern and this Calf Roper looks nice. I'm hoping it isn't much heavier than the Case...?

I recently gifted my Case medium stockman to a young friend (a 15-year-old young man whose current love is a fine Spyderco Para II but who needed-- and welcomed-- an introduction into the world of traditional knives). I thought I'd taken comparison pictures of the two knives together, but seem to have skipped that part(!). I'll see if I can borrow it back for a photo shoot. :)

Without currently having them both here in front of me, I can only go by remembered impressions-- subjective and faulty though they may be!

The Case in question was/is this one (I forget the pattern #?):

My impression is that the Case is, or at least carries, heavier, and (in this instance) its pocket-worn roundness added to 'roll' that made it seem more bulky somehow (because it slid around more). Not that I don't love that roundness in-hand!

The Calf Roper is surprisingly agile, for lack of a better term. I am continually surprised at how much blade is in this slim package. Yesterday, I had the Calf Roper in one front pocket and a 2-bladed TC barlow in the other. When reaching for the Calf Roper, I guessed wrong-- it was the smaller and lighter of the two. (Maybe that wouldn't surprise anyone else, but I'd wrongly assumed the 3-blader would present "bigger" than the 2-blader of the same length.)

I'll take some comparison pictures with a Case stockman when I can.

Thank you Pertinux!

I have to say I'm surprised, I thought for sure that the Calf Roper would be heavier.

You're welcome, but until I have both knives here again (or go visit the Case), please take my impression that the Case "carries heavier" with a grain of salt. :o

Cocobola Calf Roper 2.5 oz
Bone Calf Roper 2.7 oz
Bone BJM 2.8 oz
CASE 6318PU 2.4 oz same width but seems wider because the covers are not rounded, About 1/8" longer

I have a Coco Calf Roper. Great knife. I never carried it because I just didn't like the way the sheepsfoot felt in my hand when using the clip blade. Then one day I decided to file the kick and lower it. Now it's just right.
There is .10 oz difference between it and my GEC 68 pony jack. And for that .10 oz difference I get an extra blade. Not a bad deal at all.
