Sorry what do you mean split, the wood? The scales are in tact, it's distressed whiskey oak so has some character in it

Reporting back. So this does actually look like a little split in the original stave. If you run your nails along it, it does catch on the grain. But as you can see in the last pic the wood has been either coated or impregnated with resin or something similar to stabilize it.
