GEC does it again

Once again GEC has pretty much ruined another of their knives with a gaudy "Missouri Trapper" blade etch on some of their Missiouri Trapper Models. Almost rivals the gaudy "Calf Roper" etch on some Calf Roper models.

I'm not against blade etches but GEC just goes overboard on some of their knives.

My .02¢

They want to ensure that you KNOW it's a T-R-A-P-P-E-R :D:eek:

Bit of use and it'll vanish into thin air.

Show-Me where it says this is a Trapper? <rimshot> <I'll be here all week>

How many old knives do we see and get all excited just because they still have their original etch?
This is something that has been done for years and I see no reason for complaining about it now.

If you don't like it, take it off when you get it.

Not trying to start something, I just see no need for another thread devoted to an old time blade etch.

I dig the etch on my Calf Roper!

Perhaps GEC should have different versions--etch and etch-free.

You may get excited and get a warm and fuzzy feeling about old knives with their original etch. I don't for the overly large ones.

I've take off more than a few etches in my time.

It's not the fact that it's an etch. It's the size - dang near covers the whole blade.

You may not see the need for another thread about blade etches but I wanted to comment about this particular etch and have done so.

The Northfield etch on the blade of the pictured knife looks nice. The "Missouri Trapper" etch on the secondary blade looks gaudy. Again, my .02¢

I dunno, personally I think they way they are doing it now is acceptable for 2 reasons:

1) if you do like the etch, then it's there for you.
2) if you don't like the etch, its quite easy to remove.

If they made knives without etches, then those people who did like the etch would be left wanting. This way, those who prefer it sans etch can just get a rag and some flitz and its off in no time. Granted it might not look exactly like you want it from the factory, but these ain't no customs either.

I agree with Confucius...

Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.

...I also like this guy's comments. ;)

Agreed. Maybe something along the lines of the serialized ones have etch, others don't. The collector / pristine version and the it's something I'm going to carry everyday (or at least in the rotation) version. Just an idea, I don't know how that would work out business wise.

Just a side note, the etching on my 85 is wearing off nicely.

This
There are definitely some GEC knives I like with or without the etch. All depends on the model.

I guess its pretty good when the only thing a guy can pick on is basically a sticker on the blade.

GEC must be doing something right...

and then there's the gaps in blades, lose blades, etc. the first two of which you have personal experience with from your very useful help and advice to Humppa about his #73.

GEC puts out a great product but they aren't perfect. Gotta say though that the etches on GEC blades are well done.

Yeah, I wasn't persecuting you for your comment. I was being serious. I really don't have anything to complain about. The one time I did I called GEC direct to speak to them. The other you helped me out with the piece of fractured bone.

I'm of the state of mind that anyone should be able to express their opinions in a reasonable manner here on the forums. If not, it would get rather boring.

I wasn't going after you. I just think sometimes simple criticism gets taken way to negatively. That's why I was pointing out that you were just commenting on the etch and nothing else. I don't think I can remember you complain about the function of a GEC???

Kevin

Nope, I almost never complain about any knife I have with a problem. I usually just fix it my self.

Nothing negative taken from your comments Kevin.

Well, I just shared my 2 cents.
I guess I'll never see the point in making threads that complain about something such as an ethc.

I'm glad, Ed.

Johnny, I didn't see your comment as out of line either.

I know we are a small group here. With that said, we are all avid supporters of GEC. They get free feedback, usally with a very friendly tone.

I guess I really just don't care, for the most part I don't even see the etches when I look at a new GEC release. Unless its deeply engraved its like its not even there when I look at photos and decide to buy another user or not.

Heck, Johnny, I bet your photos alone have sold a few for GEC. Who knows, you could have gotten some serious collectors hooked.

A lot of friends replying in this thread. I like to hear what you all have to say.

Could someone at GEC simply forgot to adjust the font size on the etching machine?

A little Flitz polish has been used on All of my GEC's

I'm looking forward to the Missouri Trader lockback.

I don't care much for most of the etchings on GEC's carbon blades but I do like the 440C etches. Fortunately, the ones I don't like are the ones that are easy to remove.
