I had a chance to handle the GEC Dogleg at the Spirit of Steel knife show and consider the Dogleg Pattern to be one of my favorites. With GEC being the only large manufacturer of this pattern, that I know of, how many of you guys have picked one up?

I'm strongly considering a GEC dogleg. Since you handled one, can you tell me if it has half-stops? How were the springs?

I was hoping that people that have had them for a bit would care to comment. Looking at one at a knife show when there are a host of others nearby doesn't give you the same perspective as someone that owns one would have. Things like size, heft and so on. I doubt there is much difference between a lower priced model compared to the high end, upper priced model once you look at the over all pattern. My initial, limited, observations according to what I look for in a pocket knife was that it is a well made knife that was modeled from the smaller sized Dogleg pattern that is slim and easy to carry in your pocket. Not a work horse by any means but a timid introduction to see how the pattern sells. For you folks that like a fairly light pocket knife that will fade into your pocket until you need it, this would be a good knife. Paying extra bucks on the high end model doesn't make sense to me once you see what you actually get for the money. It might to you. I like this Dogleg but my preference in a pocket knife is a hefty piece that when it's in you pocket it has some weight to it. You know where it's at if you need it. Nice thick blades that are ground to fit and people with baby fingers complain that they are hard to open. Give me a Dogleg like that.

can't say ive even seen one in person, but would also be interested in some first hand knowledge of them.

I have one. The spring tension is just right - not a nailbuster, but good and firm. It does not have half stops.

I am lacking in knowledge, ignorant if you will, in what the difference is in the image that was posted by Lambertiana and an upper end model. Or is that an upper end model? I don't stay up on the GEC knives so I would greatly appreciate a schooling here.

All the right answers. Lucky #7 will soon be on its way to me, though it won't get any pocket time till my birthday next month.

The "Upper End" model would be the Northfield line. Five different handles, I thought Ebony was one of them, but maybe not. Same blades, different etches and grooved bolsters. All 1095. I'm curious to see how the fit is on these releases, in comparison to the Tidioute series. They are becoming available now.

great looking knife! I do wish they would have made a spear bladed version though.

Yes, one somewhat like this one. Mee too! The spear and wharncliffe blade is a wicked combination on Ken's dogleg.

I have one of the Tidioute versions in ebony. The main blade is pretty hard to open...borderline nail breaker. The pen seems to be just fine.

One other difference between the Tidioute and Northfield versions are swedged blades. The handle choices in order of price are Yellow Rose, Snakewood, Burnt Stag, Primitive Bone and Genuine Stag. The Yellow and Snakewood are not appreciably costlier than the Tidioute models, but you get the fancy bolster and end cap as well as swedges.

And a crooked shield - at least I did! Might have to send it back. It just bugs me every time I look at it. Everything else is fine on it.

Thanks, Hal. I'm a bit partial to that one myself! ;)

I really like the one I got. I mostly use the main blade. It was tight at first but I cleaned out some of the factory grease and worked the blade a bit and its much smoother. The main blade is probably a 6 with the pen maybe a 4. I don't have a problem opening up either but some of my friends definitely do (one of which said the CSC half moon pie trapper was perfect for him)

Greg - the primary differences between the Tidioute and Northfield lines are:

Tidioute: Plain bolsters, satin blade finish

Northfield: Often threaded bolsters, mirror polished blades.

My dogleg does have drawn swedges and standard nail nicks. It looks like the Northfield versions have cut swedges and long pulls on the master. And if you want fancy handle material, like stag, you will have to get a Northfield.

It is my observation that the street prices for equivalent handle materials (both being bone or wood), on a knife of this size, will be about $10-15 more for the Northfield. It's up to you to decide if the threaded bolsters, long pulls, and mirror polished blades are worth that difference. They made my decision for me, as I would have bought the ebony version regardless of whether it was Northfield or Tidioute.

I just ordered the burnt stag yesterday! 3 1/2" with a cam tang...sounds perfect to me. I can't wait!!:D

I like the look of the dog leg pattern and the spear blade. A single spear blade would be good for me. I've seen some by Menefee that I really like. The Erickson looks good as well.

Does GEC make one with a spear blade?

I have a Primitive bone on the way. Should get it Monday or Tuesday. I will post picks upon arrival.

Randy,
I don't think GEC has any Dogleg Jack's with spear blades. It's a relatively new pattern from GEC. One can hope though.:)
