GEC Jack question

On the Pony Jack, is there any problem accessing the main blade nail nick?

I can't speak to the Spear version, as I've only got the Clip point version, but right out of the tube there's no "real" problem accessing the main. I did however want just a smidge more room for my thumbnail (it kept scraping on the back of the pen) so I filed down the kick on the Pen a hair. It lowered the Pen blade enough, so now it's perfect (for me).

Thanks for that info, that concerns me though, I've heard that a few times now, about other GEC jacks, glad yours worked out ok, but I wouldn't want to get a knife that needs to go back to the factory......

Im guessing GEC has made over 1000 or 2000 jacks. We here have heard about maybe 10 people heck maybe 20 with an issue about the nick having accessibility issues. Of those I can say that I have never heard of GEC not fixing it or making it right. I mean ymmv but thats a pretty good ratio and a solid statement about great easterns customer service. I as well as others buy with confidence

Yeah, you are right. Being most of their production seems to go to forum members : ) we are going to hear about any issues here,

And by no means am I saying they dont screw some stuff up. I also would not want to grind a kick on a new knife. Its a pet peeve of mine. But givin the history as I see it, even if I got one I didnt think was right. GEC would certainly take it in on warranty. I consider them to be the best in the business right now but have no problem telling yall any flaws I have with any of my knives. Anything you buy from a production company has a chance of being flawed, how the company deals with it is what I look at.

Look forward to seeing what you pick up filedog :D

I'm leaning toward the #78 American Jack, due out soon. I like that pattern a little better, and the bolsters will be NS : )

I don't think access to the pen blade nail nick will be an issue with the 78, as the main clip is large enough to have the nick set higher above the frame than on the smaller jacks. They're aware of issues with a few of the Pony Jacks, but most were OK.

I've had mince since they were first released and can not say one negative thing about it. Everything about mine was exactly as I'd want it to be.
Still is.

Excellent! I just found out I have an unforeseen expense to take care of, but I want one of these! So this knife will use the 79 frame? I would have guessed the 15.

I believe that is correct.

Man, seeing that ebony almost makes me wish I'd have gotten one of those instead of the bone. Very nice looking knife.

As far as problems, I will say that my pj is pretty thick behind the edge, which drives me crazy, and has a very slight recurve that was only noticeable after sharpening for the first time, now you can really see it. Also, my pen almost made it impossible to get to the main nick. Poor design in my opinion. My tc barlow was wonderful in that regard, even almost pinchable. My pj cannot be pinched open. The thick blade is the big drives me crazy point though. I'm overall not as happy with the fit and finish of the pj versus my tcb.

I like my pj, but daily wonder if maybe I shouldn't just go back to the tc barlow and move this one on. Maybe I'll make a separate thread, I'm rambling now. Time for sleep.

While I understand your frustration with the thick edge, that wouldn't bother me too much, since it will sharpen out. Same with the slight recurve (I've had other knives with this issue).
The hard to reach nail nick would though - seems like a design problem.

Not to derail the conversation from the op's original topic, but here goes. I consider the thick edge and recurve to be just like the poor nick access, bad design and execution. I shouldn't have to sharpen out a recurve on a new knife, and the edge being thick is a huge turn off for me. It will sharpen out to a certain degree but not really. It will still always be thicker behind the edge than it should be. Again, just bad execution. It makes the little knife that should act like a laser act clunky and awkward. I may regrind it, or I may just put it in the tool box and figure it out later. Color me disgusted and incredibly disappointed at the very least.

Couldn't you send it back?
