I have been wanting one of these for quite some time now. Yes, they seem almost impractical to me. For those of you who own or have owned one of these monsters what are your thoughts and recommendations? Do you pocket carry or use a sheath of some sort?

I had a Bradford Cultlery sunfish by GEC and it was amazing and cartoonish. Impractical for EDC but so much fun to handle and admire. Wish I'd kept mine but it is not a user for my lifestyle.

Here are a couple of older pics on hand. Top to bottom, Whaler, Limberjack, Sunfish:

Here is a pic of a different bone handle Lumberjack with a single blade Sunfish easy open. The Lumberjack blade is significantly more robust. Also, the Lumberjacks have a half stop:

Here's the favorite from my pile of larger ones:

You're gonna feel all of them in your pocket but the single blade 36s are the best to carry in my opinion. I carry the 36 in a leather pocket slip; helps to keep it upright in pocket. Good luck in your hunt.

I have a toenail - call it the cutter. That's because if I ever really need to cut something, I use it. It's too heavy for me to pocket carry, but if I camped, I would probably throw it in a pack. It could cut tent stakes and fuzz sticks and snares and carrots and fish and bears. That's a fact.

Thanks all, for your information and the photos. I'm thinking a bone handled Lumberjack might just be the beast I'm after.

Nice looking knives. How useful or usable is the saw blade/screwdriver? Is that a lock I see for that blade?jwh
The lock is for the saw blade, or what passes for one. The saw is poorly designed and pretty much useless for cutting wood. Might make a good bone/ cartilage cutter for hunting but I have not tried that yet. There was a lengthy thread devoted to this knife and its issues when it was first introduced.

I've got several of the big boys, and I really like them. The Sunfish seems considerably smaller than the others, and it's a joy to carry. In my opinion, the Lumberjack and Roughneck aren't all too practical, but they're terrific nonetheless. I say get one!

I 'm thinking about these more and more. Didn't care much to start with but now am fascinated. How do they compare size wise to A Schrade 51OT?

Thanks for all your input folks. I just ordered the Grizzley Bone 1 blade Lumberjack. It looks like a beast of a piece of steel. For something that big and strong the Grizzley Bone handle seemed appropriate. That makes my 2 knives for 2013 a peanut and a lumberjack. A study in contrast to say the least.

All of these nice photos are getting me excited. Thanks for showing these.

I carry my GEC sunfish all the time.

Pocket carry. It does not feel heavy or obtrusive at all.

It is the all steel with brown jigged bone. Long pull. It is pinchable, and with the small blade is pretty handy.

I don't notice it any more than I do a #23. It is skinnier than my double spring #23.

Some poor comparison pics to show size (just a note, the two bladed #73 scout is shown, not the larger #23 pioneer!)

I would really love a Lumberjack. In my initial purchase of traditionals, I ordered up a handful, and bought a couple other brands, I wish I had just ordered the Whaler, or rough neck when I was doing the order, instead of a few of the others!

The small blade on the sunfish is very unobtrusive when using the large.

The large blade is a bit more in the way when using the small blade (which is a thin wicked slicer).

But it is not uncomfortable.
