GEC Model #25 Wharncliff with Burnt Stag scales

Nice knife Gary,

Mine has ridden in my watch pocket since I got it, I carry #55. Thanks for the pictures you posted, they help me appreciate this little gem all the more.

Love that Yukon also.

Thanks for posting the second set of pics.
I really like that little Clip vs. their Pen blade.
I guess the "sunken" spring on the half stop is a signature of theirs. I kind of like it. It seems to help stop the blade better, and with the amount of effort required to get it moving in the first place, that is not a bad thing.

Now I have to go see if there are any of these left :D

I have a #25 Sheepfoot Jack in Acrylic.
This thread has given me the incentive to carry the knife.

I used Brasso to clean off the etching '1 of 50' and 'Tidioute' from the blade.
I sharpened the main Sheepfoot on the DMT Aligner so it has a much more acute edge, and now very sharp.
The sheepfoot can be pinched open.
The small pen blade I reprofiled freehand from course to E Fine and it now it is almost scapel like.

A nice carry

I am looking at buying a #25 Barlow with single blade clip...

George Wolstenholm of Sheffield England used the IXL (I Excel) mark on his knives. While the Northfield trademark is now owned by GEC, it is an old mark and the company (Northfield not GEC) used the Un-X-LD mark, likely as a dig at (or to ride the popularity of) the Sheffield maker, whom dominated the American market at the time. Interestingly, Waynorth recently showed an Empire knife with the mark WeXL.

Now I'm off to get one of those #25 barlows.

That knife really is perfect IMO except for the 1-100 etch. I think it could have been done SO MUCH NICER or even NOT done at all.

Having said that i still would love to own one !

Thanks guys, I'm really liking both blades a lot, the smaller one is just
so neat and handy for detailed cuts, very nice and the larger blade isn't
too large, just right for a wharncliff blade I think.

The handle does fill the hand and I agree GEC certainly has some nice stag!
Very textured grip for good control of the knife, all in all, one of the better
purchases I've made in a long time ;)

Couldn't take it any longer, took some Metal Glo polish to the blade
and removed, as best I could, that 1 of 100, you can just make out
a faint ghost of that on there but it's a lot better looking now, you'd
have to 'look' for it which is, to me, a good thing ;)

Thats a great looking knife. I like the blade selection, it's nice to have a small point along with a wharnciffe. Can you pinch the main blade open with your fingers?

Edit to add that I can pinch it open with my fingers, just did it now as
I was cutting tape on a priority mail box and thought uh... I can do that ;)

and yes, "you look Marvelous" as Billy Crystal would say :) without the 1 of 100 on there!

working on a sheath for it now, tough to make as it's a short, VERY stout
handle, but it's butt is wider so that helps for retention...

Here's a shot of the sheath, finished up this afternoon
not much to speak of, as I say it's a short stubby knife
so as you can see, the end of the sheath is pretty thickly
formed to fit in the stag, while the opening is just a little
narrower which provides good retention.

Gary-

My GEC Wharncliff Barlow in stag is on its way! Thank you for being a bad influence!!! lol

I'll post pics, but not as nice as yours.

Congrats Chewy! looking forward to the pictures, just remember that you'll
probably need to touch up the edge when she arrives, so don't be surprised
but, the good news is, she sharpens up nicely ;)

and thanks Texas, I can see that now that you mention it, as I say, it's a
short, stout, little knife, so the sheath is much the same way...

Nice sheath Gary! For some reason it reminds me of the head of a hippo!:)

From the angle of the original shot I can see how it would and here's a shot
of the knife in the sheath and on a belt, you can see how small it is compared
to a blue jean belt loop, also as I said the sheath had to be made so the
larger end of the knife would fit into it, but it presses through
and has a solid snap in retention

And here it a shot of how the blade side is cleaned up from the 1 of 100
logo they had on there, you can still just make it out, but now
it's not so offensive, well at least it was to me ;)

Nice little knife for sure and I am amazed at the quality of the stag they use
they must have a nice stash of good stag!

I always convex everything anyway. Should be fun. If it's sharp out of the box, I'll leave it as is until the edge starts to fail.

Convexing is always a good thing, cuts so much better with those shoulders knocked down
but, I've barely had any knife arrive that didn't need sharpening, most usually do :)

Edited to say, I recall one knife that I got, a Moki folder from Bladeforums special a LONG time
ago before Spark took over, yeah, that long ago ;) and it was one of the sharpest knives
out of the box I've ever had, I don't know if you can even get them anymore, I'm thinking no,
but she was sharp!
