Ok, I like GEC. They make very well made knives. However, they have some dimensional issues sometimes. For instance, take this #54. Its 1 of 50 number 33 in Brimstone bone. This sucker is 4 1/8 inches long, half an inch thick and weighs just under 27 lbs (ok it just feels that heavy). Was this ever a pattern made in the past? Its far to big for pocket carry. Its even larger than the 2012 Forum knife (which just came in...very nice) which is a Trapper patern! GEC knives need to go on a diet.

Great color on the brimstone bone. Yep the #53/#54 cigar frame is a bit large. They do carry a bit heavy in the front pocket, but ride nicely vertically next to my wallet. I carry the 53/54 more than any other knife.

Aka......

You need to jump on the #66 pattern then at a diminutive 3 1/2".......and have all the joy of a stockman, muskrat, jack or moose in a smaller package

True.

I wish GEC could offer some slim&light weight yet GEC style ( longpull , manly profile, etc.) folders.

Um okay. Carried a 54 bigjack in my right front pocket for a while. Sometimes this forum makes me chuckle on what is considered a MONSTER knife :-p

4 1/4 is not a monster.

I really like #54 pattern, nice and solid, handle shape is real nice in the hand.
I use this for my moose, knife is tethered to my belt, keeps from falling out when crawling around and such, also keeps the knife suspended in pocket in the vertical position, zero weight in pocket, don't even notice it is there. I don't keep items in pockets with my knives, but with this method of carry I do keep other items in pocket.

I carry non-traditionals all the time. ZT 301 Hinderer XM-18 etc. Big ol knives, but they have a clip that keeps them oriented in the pocket. This #54 plug plunks down to the bottom of the pocket and turns sideways...looks like heck and carries like heck. I think it would do well to have a belt pocket for carry, which I might try to get made for it. The length is not the only consideration either, its much thicker than any Case I have.

Personally 4 1/4" is more pocket knife then I want to pocket carry. 3 5/8" is about my limit. To each his own I say.

Don't mind me though, I really don't care what anyone carries. I'm just surprised by the masses.

Here is the most recent scan of mine to contribute to your thread

Its just I think of 4 1/4 as large and nothing more. Monster makes me think of knives like I saw in a picture behind Fausto or the one Charlie was holding in the Cover Shots thread.

I've been carrying my #53 for weeks now, no problem with the size at all. Just right!

Agreed. I have a Scagel barlow that is a pretty good sized knife at 5" long closed. It's too large to carry comfortably, but I just think it's a large slipjoint. There are very few folding knives that I would describe as monstrous.

I assume you're talking about this one... :D

I tend towards smaller knives myself, but I don't consider 4,25" a monster either. It's just a big knife...bigger than what I'm willing to carry in my pocket for sure :)

Fausto

The 73 is the biggest GEC knife I'm interested in carrying, and this in single blade form for that matter.

Broader handles, weight and the thickness/gauge of their knives makes them a lot different from CASE or Böker knives of the same length.

One man's monster is another man's nirvana......

GEC's smaller knives such as the 33 Conductor and 68 White Owl offer me compact but credible carry.

Here is a pic of my Tidioute Cuban EDC on the left, with really big slipjoints to the right.

4-1/8, 4-3/8, 4-1/2, 4-7/8, 5 inches even on the 'pick.

I frequently edc my grandad barlow S&M. It is the same one as above. In that same pocket I will toss an all steel sunfish, and a #23 two bladed pioneer. Then a small barlow in the coin pocket. I must have bigger pockets. Tell you what, you send me that stockman, and I will send you a smaller knife, like a case stockman. That is a great looking knife in the perfect edc size for me!
