Oh boy, I'm glad I saw this thread before making my first slip joint purchase. I was planing on a GEC #73 but I refuse to dread opening a knife when it's needed. What a shame, I thought I found my perfect slip joint.
Bleev3, I have two #73's and I find them smooth and easy to open. I would not hesitate to recommend that you try them. No resemblance to a nail breaker in my experience.
My 73 settled down quite a lot, or I figured out how best to open iit. It is one of my favorite knives. Don't be put off by this nail-breaker talk. In any case, it seems to only apply to early runs of this knife (~2007 iirc).

If you don't buy a GEC Pattern #73 based on this thread you are just cutting your nose off to spite your face. Some of those knives have had stiff springs, especially, the early knives. The later knives have had reasonable springs.
Quit being wishy-washy, pull the trigger and get a GEC Pattern #73 or any other GEC but get a knife soon -- any brand slip joint -- but get one soon.
