GEC 68 pony Jack vs GEC 39 Sheffield. Wood vs pioneer bone, clip vs spear. Same knife basically but not. What is the preferred choice?

That's kind of a tough question to answer as in some ways both knives are similar, but in many ways they're quite different. At the end of the day, which is preferable is going to depend on the person and on their needs and desires. Your best option is to get one of each in hand and decide which to keep (or keep both as many here decide to do), or think about what kind of knife you like more and would be more useful to you and make the decision. There are many pictures of both knives all over the porch and many other places on the internet, as well as videos on youtube.

Having said all that, If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably go with the pony jack, but that's just my opinon based on pictures I've seen as I don't own either knife.

Pony Jack doesn’t have a half stop. That’s a deal breaker for a lot of people. It’s a very nice knife though. I’d take it over the pioneer bone 39 only because I prefer the clip blade.

I'd go with the pony jack.... both nail nicks on the same side, which is my preference in a jack knife.... the 68's are a very hand-friendly, comfortable size.

The Sheffield jack nicks are on the same side which I prefer also.

As others said the 2 are different knives and you need both, I prefer the Sheffield Jack, good classic design jack.

Clip > Spear
Cam Stop > Half stop
Equal end > 39 frame
Rounded bolster > square bolster

Pony Jack wins.

It's odd how tastes change.... I used to strongly prefer a spear point main blade, almost insisted on it. Now, I've swung the other way, and strongly prefer a clip point main blade.
I can't explain it.... I like the Sheffield jack... reminds me of my Schatt and Morgan English jack, but for whatever reason, the clip points still appeal to me more....

I like the Pony better. It’s a more pleasing shape and feels better in my hand than the slightly curved #39. But that’s purely personal preference.

39 for me, I've never loved the equal ended knives, I like 'em, just don't love 'em. The size and shape of the 39 really appeals to me!

I have a 39 in pioneer bone, I absolutely love it, the bone has so much shape and character, more like stag does than typical bone. And the knife itself is close to perfect. Can’t speak for the pony, but that English jack is a sweetheart.

Same knife basically but not.
Absolutely not. Sheffield Jack is classier, slimmer, Pony Jack is simplier, thicker (at least it looks like it, I only have a White Owl version which is thinner because of single back spring). 68 has smaller main blade, but is a bit bigger overall (paradox). Not to mention that they have different frames. It all depends on what you need, be more specific on your preferences, please.

I want something that will carry and use. Give to kid one day. I’m no expert on blades or sharpening and read that a spear is harder to sharpen. I like the wood of the pony but have not held the pioneer bone in hand. Have an opportunity to trade straight up for the 39 so undecided

Were you able to get that issue with your #68 resolved?

if the pony jack had a half stop, it might be quite a contender...

This is funny to me 🤣 just goes to show we all have different tastes. I used to like halfstops, now I much prefer a cam tang. Not that a half stop kills a knife for me. But I don't prefer them. In this case it's hard to chose between the two. In my case I would pony jack because I have a bunny knife and a Sheffield is on the same frame. I have a pony Jack and carry it quick often. The small main clip is one of the big downsides to it.

Thought the clip blade was the selling point of the knife
