GEC Popularity Question

When originally planned and designed, they weren't expecting to end up being scarce highly-sought after Veblen goods.

Well, the day ain't over yet, and I already learned something 🍻

Veblen, as in:

"A Veblen good is a type of luxury good, named after American economist Thorstein Veblen, for which the demand increases as the price increases, in apparent contradiction of the law of demand, resulting in an upward-sloping demand curve."

I had never heard of it, and am glad I looked it up.

The keychain knife also used 420 steel instead of 440 or 1095.
Back to the original question, I usually like the regular GEC line the best because I tend to not like extra engraving (like the shield) or script on my knives.
With that said, the quality tends to be outstanding on all their lines!

Very true. The Farm & Field knives are the ones i use the most. They feature the cutlery rivet pivot which makes them very reliable.

There aren't many patterns in this lineup, so i've had to get some Northfields and Tidioutes. What else to do ?

All of them look like extremely satisfying and rewarding to use knives to my eye.

The F&F are gems though, Field and Farm says it all, up for outdoor use without having to worry. It's a bit like; the Anglo-Saxons won't understand the analogy of course ;) ; a car like a Suzuki Jimny- small go anywhere rugged 4x4 that can get into places land whales would be stranded in. Go to thick woodlands, hillsides with animals, vineyards and get the job done year after year no complaints.😍 Too bad the present EU has torpedoed them and made them, like all else, horribly expensive.

Credit where it is due. I first saw the term in a post by our own mrknife mrknife in a thread about GEC, and I also went and looked it up. :) It was nice that there was already a concise term to describe the phenomenon of "things that are expensive because enough people like to own expensive things (for prestige or how it makes them feel about themselves) such that it drives the price up". Demand creating more demand kind of thing.

That modded calf pen looks crazy with the one arm removed!

The one arm blade hook was uncomfortable. The kind of problem a good file can solve.

Very good analogy. When i bought a Susuki Jimny, 7 years ago, it was still a good deal. No useless features, small car, low power engine but it never fails on the bad snowy forestry roads of my area.
The same can be said about the Farm & Field knives. What i need, no more, no less.

What I appreciate about gec is that they recycle patterns, it gives people such as myself and others that are new to gec and other traditional knives(should say returning because it's where I started)a chance to aquire and try them out, without paying huge money for the same pattern with an earlier manufacture date.i have acquired some interesting patterns.but to be honest I develop a relationship early with a certain knife and stick with it for weeks.the 85 cap lifter, the 68 stag white owl and 86 ebony hj.im a loyal creature of habit.but when I go to Friday night meat draws I carry a different one every time,a few friends I meet up with appreciate the show and tell.
