GEC protruding back spring (UPDATE)

Hello everyone,

I just got my second GEC today from a retailer today and it’s back spring has a slight protrusion when I’m the open position. When it’s closed it’s flush, half stop is about the same as when it’s open. The half stop not being flush is expected but from my understanding the open position should be flush too. My first GEC I got from someone off here is flush when open and some of my $10 Rough Ryders are also flush when open. From my understanding slip joints should be flush when open right? Or am I mistaken in this thought? Should I contact GEC warranty?

Thank everyone!

First, welcome to the Porch! Would you be kind of enough to post some pictures of your knife. Keep in mind that production knives are not custom made and have issues from time to time. Thanks.

Yes, of course! Give me a minute to figure out how.

I think I got it! Let me know what you think.

Link to pics work. Good looking knife. I personally wouldn’t be bothered by what I see in your pictures, but if it’s bugging you, then contact GEC and I’m sure they will be able to take care of it.
Thanks for your input. I agree it’s not too bad but I do find it a bit annoying. I might just email them and see what they think and what they can do.

Ditto. Thanks for the pics.

I'd be disappointed too.
OK its a Bull Buster...GECs micarta ' workingmans' range but after everything we see and hear about GEC quality...and certainly any of the pricing, gouging and flipping that goes on...why wouldn't you expect perfection....? But hey it doesnt look too far off...
My 1of 5 Mammoth ivory #79 workhorse whittler has the very tip of the sheepsfoot snapped off because of too thin a grind....deffo not perfect ....but I still love it.🤗

We all have certain things about knives that annoy us but might not bother others e.g. blade centre doesn't much bother me PROVIDED the action is not impaired or the liner is being touched. Others hate it unless it's dead centre.

What you have with that GEC is something that certainly crosses my line, the spring must be flush with the liner when open for me as otherwise it interferes with the handling, my thumb goes there and if something is raised or there's a sunk depression you feel the awkward rough edges. Not right! I would contact GEC but don't hold your breath...they may or may not treat your complaint as legit. For context, all the Bullbusters I've had/have were perfectly flush on open and great to handle.

Thanks, Will

Thanks for your input! and I was expecting perfect or at least near perfect with GEC's rep, even If it's a working mans knife. From what I can see it seems this latest run had this issue, or at least the red micarta ones. but that's based off of only 2 of them.

Thanks for your input and I agree, I'm okay with a $10 Rough Ryder not being flush since they are cheap but even then 2/4 of the ones I have a flush back spring when open. If it was smaller it would be less of an issue but the Bull Buster is such a large folding knife where that little bit sticking out feels like a lot. I have contacted them and I'm waiting for a reply.

I, too, would be bothered by that. I'm sure it's not too bad for casual use, but if you're doing a lot of cutting for a prolonged time then that may start to cause problems.

I would contact the dealer first to see what they suggest. They may be able to exchange your knife for a new, non-flawed one more quickly than GEC can. Good luck.

Thanks for your input and I completely agree. I did contact the dealer and he has the same one as me and his also has the issue. That's why I said earlier that it might be an issue with this batch or at least the red micarta ones.

My red micarta 21 slippy is flush when open, so maybe a few escaped with a proud spring, but not all of them.

Sorry to hear it isn’t up to standards. i am not sure GEC can repair that? You can always sell and try something else….

Thanks for you input, that is useful to know. Don't think I'm gonna sell it though. To get a GEC I want I'd have to sell it for $70+ more than I bought it for or pay more and I'm not interested in either.
