GEC Slim Trapper is here - *photos throughout*

You want me to put a moratorium on photos for a few days? ;)

-- Nate

No. they're awsome pics. I think after the BF knife an Un-X-Led is on top.
Lets see, I need a new 63032, I'm waiting for GEC to come out with a regular stockman, a Schatt stockman like Ed's, theres a barrel knife sitting in an antique store that I want, along with an old Boker USA jack, (if they're still there), some older Schrade stocks. Too many knives, not up on the houshold priority. The trappers and GEC are doing from what I see in the pictures and everyones opinions on them, a class act job.
I have some questions on GEC for you guys with them. Is there any difference in the quality between the three brands, or is it just pattern and style? Are the shields pinned? I know most have half stops. but which ones don't?
Thanks

Nate, the price is right for that one and for now its at the top of the list. It has everything.

My Wife is asking me what I want for Christmas. Hmm, my two front teeth or this....

Okay, no moratorium means I can add these pictures of the patina that started to develop after yesterday's apple cutting. :)

In the bottom left side of the pics you can see a piece of note paper. I used that because it seemed to be the best way to put light on the length of the blade so as to fully detail the color without too much glare. I think it makes the contrast appear greater than it is to the eye in normal light though.

The shield is pinned on mine. Not sure which models don't have half stops.

Regarding the difference between the brands, it was just talked about in another thread here (I think the one about GEC doglegs) and another poster pretty much nailed it - the Northfield marked knives are going to be the top end in terms of handle materials and detail work like embellished bolsters and swedges. I think the quality is strong across the board in terms of things like finish and walk & talk based on the ones I've handled, but others here could speak to it better because they've seen a lot more examples.

And now, sports fans, here's your Post Turkey Day Patina Update :)

Sure would be nice if they offer it in 440C. The slim line it my favorite pattern
but I won't buy 1095 any more. I looked at the GEC site and anything I would buy all had high carbon blades.

Agree -be real nice to see it in the blood red bone with 440C and the acorn shield. Dont think I've seen any new SS roll out lately - could be a flurry around the corner, no?

This would be a great pattern to have in stainless. Given that GEC can do some pretty small runs I'd say the chance is always there to see a pattern make an appearance in another steel. Whether or not the other details like handle material and finish details match up with your wants is another matter, but some hope is better than none. :D

Got another photo to add. You can see the story behind the Camel patch kit here.

I'd like to see ths one in stainless too, especially good for easy food prep which this type of knife excells in. But, GEC says that buyers/collectors want carbon by a big margin.

Thanks for the comments on the photos. I do use a light box. The lights are just household adjustable desk lamps with those daylight tint bulbs. I think the weather will be a little warmer and sunnier tomorrow so I hope to get some good shots of the trapper outside. In the field, as it were. ;)

The knife is really quite pocket friendly with its light weight and trim profile. It also happens to be a great fit for a William Henry clipcase I had laying around in the event I didn't want it colliding with other items.

The edge is proving somewhat less responsive to my sharpening efforts than I had anticipated. I've not had 1095 before that went this long on medium grit rods without seeming to get anywhere.

The 1095 on a GEC seems to be treated a little harder than the old Schrades and Cases.

It also holds an edge longer.

Thats it then. That long swedge on that cali clip just did it. I have to get one now.
