GEC "Store" Models (Seconds?)..If You Have One I'd.....

I have one "S" store knife, I've never been able to find any flaw with it, it's actually better than the last 4 Gec's I've purchased that were not store knives, I happen to be carrying it today, my first 3 Gec's this being my 3rd were all superb, the rest have been sub par IMO and I'm not too picky, mine are all users, but the "S" knife is excellent

I bought a bunch when I visited GEC. I was looking at one that was flawless and I asked Bill Howard what was wrong with it. After looking at it carefully he said "You know what's wrong with it? Somebody stamped an S on it, that's what's wrong with it!"

Of the 6 knives I bought, I could only see a flaw on one.

LOL love that story thanks for sharing! :)

I bought a 23 the last time I was there. It has some of the best stag I've ever seen. Still can't figure out why it was a second...

I have a stag viper marked "s". Got it off the FS forum here.

The stag is pretty noticeably mismatched, the base color (where not burnt) is milky white on one scale and light brownish on the other.

Makes a heck of a user, and was priced accordingly. I've see much worse on knives that weren't seconds.

Other than that, can't find a single flaw.

Same experience here. I bought an "S" marked 85 EO, and can't find a thing wrong with it. This was, I think, my first GEC, and I was testing the waters. Needless to say, I've become a convert (addict) : )

I picked up a "second" TC barlow during the past summer. The only thing that made it a second was the fact that there was a bit of a smooth spot with no jigging on mark side near the spring.

Solid knife and another I wish I held onto :grumpy:

So I’m curious, typically about how much were the S knives marked down from their regular counterparts?

I have bought probably 5 or 6 knives , while in Titusville , that were marked with an "S " and have Never Found a reason for a Flaw . When you are there , and looking at so many GEC knives , I get a little excited and do not pay much attention to the price . Later I realize that there is not much of a Price Reduction , if any . Just happy to find one that I never had before .

Given the current feeding frenzy for nearly any GEC, I wonder if the 'S' practice has been discontinued? What's the newest one anybody has?

Seems that bargains were to be had and the 'S' denoted cosmetic flaws rather than functional ones.

When they were making smaller runs, it was probably easier to cull more.
Now that they are producing larger runs, I doubt they take as much time to cull them.

Ive had a few S knives. Some rendezvous knives have the S on them, even some of the coveted parts knives for some reason have an S. Ive asked Bill, William, Patty, and Christine Tucker, some times its the tiniest cosmetic defect, some times its a slight gap and most times its just cause it got an S on it. The other year I was at a rendezvous, I scored some 15 bail and chains with clips that had that S on it. The issue, the clip blade had some spots on it. No big deal as it became a blade swap donor. This year's rendezvous I finally got a 71 in red micarta with an S and the smooth white bone TC that has an S. Only difference issue? The barlow was a small club's order and the S helped separate the ones that I guess went back to them, there was only 6 of em. And the 71, couldnt find a flaw. My speculation is that from year to year, theyll end with knives that just didnt leave the shop, and so next year or after theyll go at a discount. I remember another rendezvous there was a bunch of 85s in stag that were flawless basically. paulhilborn paulhilborn said no dont buy em for a blade delete 😂

It's a Second because they didn't tell you they used Cell and not Acrylic......;) Watch out for the Gasser and don't let it near any heat:eek::D
You had me for a moment haha…
But if you are serious it’s guaranteed to explode like the scuba tank at the end of Jaws since I live in Hawaii and the knives I carry get quite warm.
