GEC Sunfish All Steel - some issues

I have the Northfield Sunfish in Crimson Grizzly and like it a lot. It's a hand full! I like the 4 1/4" overall length. I'm told that GEC will reduce the spring tension if you ask. Never tried it myself. (I have one that could certainly use some spring attention as the knife is essentially useless the way it is. That particular GEC knife was my very first. Great intro to GEC, eh?) My Sunfish is a little hard to open, but certainly not a nail breaker. It has the nail nick which helps put a little more leverage on the blade to open it.

If you like the pattern and feel, I would certainly send it back if GEC can do anything about the spring tension. Sharpening... well... the wharncliffe blade on my 2013 forum knife was pretty poor in that department. But after some grumbling, I reprofiled it and it is very sharp now.

The EZ-Open sunfish arrived today... between the cutout and a softer spring, opening it is a breeze. Still takes some muscle to break the backsquare free, but not too bad closing it the rest of the way. Not any thinner or lighter than the two-blade, which was surprising... the blade seems heftier. Fits perfect in the watch pocket. The edge is much sharper out of the box (tube?) as well, easily push -cuts paper. The lesson is to be wary of limited run or prototype models if you're not a collector, I suppose.

I can understand the issue with difficulty opening the knife. If its too difficult the knife will see little use. Im sure GEC can remedy that. As far as sharpness. I really dont consider it an issue or a flaw per se. I have to sharpen EVERY new knife I get, they are never sharp enough even the couple of Rough Riders I have purchased. I expect to have to sharpen and have accumulated the necessary equipment and skill to do it to my liking. It goes with being into knives. The only manufacturers that have surprised me withe their edges is Benchmade and Helle. Everything else is a meh...to me.

This thread is making me wonder if I should reconsider a purchase of a sunfish, hehe. The only thing I want to know is: Does anyone here have any issues opening that pen blade? It seems like a real bear trap to me.....But I still want one for some reason...

What's the blade length on these babies?

This has been my experience also-maybe not to such an extent. Its good to sharpen knives so slightly unsharp GECS are a win win for me.:D
