GEC Then and Now

As far as the shield placement goes, I'm sure they moved it because of (possible/probable) scale cracking issues. Just think about it, and you'll see what I mean.

I've been thinking about it and I don't see what you mean.

My guess: If the shield has a pin in the center, you now have a row of three holes drilled through the scale material, creating a weak spot (Like perforations in paper).

Not only that, but because the shields are inletted into the handle, the bone/wood/etc. is thinner there right between the pins, making it easier for cracks to "travel".

That could be but then again you would still have three pins aligned end to end. I don't think it's anything to be concerned with either way. Some of my older pinned knives have the same issue and the scales haven't cracked/split/broke after 70/80 years or more.

Really like how GEC has evolved over the years and really listened to its customers. Makin subtle changes where they see fit to make us happy. Makin a nice run of 3.5" pocket friendly users in some old timey patterns to make us happy too.

One would wonder in 5 years from now if the majority of GEC`s out there will be in the pockets of users or on display in their collections?
