This little fellow arrived yesterday. I'm very pleased with the purchase except for one little thing: The main blade is a nail breaker with an extra snappy half-stop. I plan to tape off the edge and open/close the blade a number of times in the hopes of easing the opening a bit. Let me know if you know any any other tricks to loosen it up a bit. The pen blade has a easier pull.
Sure is pretty, though, don't you think? I especially like the character of the bone, it has a few natural nicks and other textured bits which go well with the nearly translucent glow of the goldenrod saw cut bone.

Very good scales on that, lot of variation. Strange 'tanto' like Clip blade GEC are using, but it suits.

Dig the Old School Soviet camera!

Congrats on gettin' yours - that was quick! Great pics and lots of character on that bone on the pen blade side.

In the past I have used a very small, narrow file to round off the squared shoulder of the tang. This will smooth things out going from half-stop to full open and back. I think it's impossible to file the other shoulder (which is always under the backspring) without disassembling the knife. Otherwise, yeah just working the blade hundreds of times will eventually help a bit.

Were it me, yeah, I'd just oil it up and play with it. You can open and close a knife a lot of times while watching TV, talking, etc.

More incentive to use the secondary blade?

I have a Queen barlow with similar scales but I think I'm liking those even more. I wouldn't be too happy with the recessed pin they put in there, but I guess is no big deal.

I don't mind it, at least it has symmetry with the recessed pin on the other side. Makes it feel more like a limited production small business sort of thing to me, added character and all that.

Thanks for the comments, gents.

Got one just like this plus one in ebony wood on the way sometime next week. Really looking forward to them both.

One of the bigger selling points for me with this model is that there's no big billboard etching on the blade.

The GEC family brands are great and I like the looks of a lot of them, but I think they either need to get rid of the billboards or tone them way down. Probably more people than don't hate billboards/etching/writing on a blade...just detracts from what would otherwise be a very beautiful knife in my opinion. At least they got this one right!

evrytime I see a new GEC, I want another new knife haha. Thanks for the pictures. Looks like a fantastic companion

got a single blade '11 model for a friend, palyed with it a bit and the first time I tried opening it it was HARD! the 10th time it was good, still hardish but ok for a gec

open it 10-50 times, clean and lube it (lube it keeping it bolster down on a tissue paper and open/close) and it will be good, i think

you can flush out the knife by going outside & spraying wd40 thru the mechanism. notice all the black residue that will float out, dry knife & apply remoil to joints. this should help smooth the action.very nice bone---dennis

Great photography and nice knife... The color of that bone really looks good on that pattern knife. Hope you get that main blade smoothed a bit.

Thanks folks. After a few sessions of blade manipulation the little barlow has loosened up a little bit, enough to banish the nailbreaker title. Now it's what I'd call "pleasantly tenacious".

It sure does ride nice in the watch pocket of my jeans.

Nice pattern and scales. Looks like a tough smaller carry that can handle anything reasonable that you throw at it.

Nice photography.

Good looking knife.

Congrats!

Wow!

I don't usually like the Barlow pattern myself. But that is a very nice-looking knife. I especially like the blade shape on that particular knife. It looks as if it would be a very useful blade for EDC.

Well, look at it like this. At least you'll never need to worry about the spring wearing out in your lifetime.

Mine should be here next week, can't wait.
