GEC Tidioute Barlow

My Golden Rod Barlow showed up today which was bit of a surprise...wasn't expecting it until tomorrow.

Anyway, very impressive and very well made slipjoint. Much truer to the spirit of stuff made 35 years ago and more. I've got a few Case knives from the 70's which are in my opinion pretty superior to anything Case makes now short of the Tony Bose collaborations. That's my benchmark anyway...I'm no knife expert...but I know a quality knife when I handle it.

GEC's...at least this one anyway...feel a lot like the older Case knives I have. Better attention to detail and just better built overall. Very very pleased. I'll reserve final judgment though once I've got the remaining two in hand. Went a little nuts...tax return showed up. :p

I should note to the OP too that the main blade on mine is in no way a nail breaker(maybe I just got lucky). Stiff maybe, but I'm used to a stronger spring. After a few openings, it's smoothed up very nice. The pen blade was effortless to open...very smooth and the spring on it is adequate.

Still got another Tidioute and a Northfield barlow on the way, should have them all by Wednesday and I'll post up some pics and a mini review as soon as I can.

I got 3 Barlows: 2 Queen Dan Burke small Barlows (my avatar) and Case Dark Mollasses Barlow... Now I purchased 4th barlow when my brother paid back money he owed me. I ment to buy another knife but I saw just two Gec Tidioute Barlows in ebony left, so I bought one. I hope to get one soon. First Gec that has no blade etch. It will be a very nice working knife.

Barlow is very fine pattern and one my favourites with the Canoe. I just really hope GEC would make 3½" barlow aswell, 3" pocket knives from GEC are fine users but now and then I hope to have bit more length on a handle.

If I could even remotely complain about the GEC barlow at all it would be I wish is was a 3½", but honestly once you start using it, you start to forget about the slightly smaller size because it's just such a well made knife. I won't be surprised though to see them eventually introduce a full 3½" barlow.

I am sure about that, now I am waiting that mine arrives here. I love GEC's but this is my first GEC barlow and 3rd #25 series knife. I got two single blade wharncliffe jacks in burnt stag. Very nice knives and perfect, people friendly edc blades.

Congrats on gettin' yours - that was quick! Great pics and lots of character on that bone on the pen blade side.

In the past I have used a very small, narrow file to round off the squared shoulder of the tang. This will smooth things out going from half-stop to full open and back. I think it's impossible to file the other shoulder (which is always under the backspring) without disassembling the knife. Otherwise, yeah just working the blade hundreds of times will eventually help a bit.
I did the same thing with a Case Barlow. Go slowly.

I like to use thread cutting oil and open it about 100 million times but probably any oil is fine. Another trick is to dab a little mothers mag polish in there with the oil for a little polishing action. Nice knife.

I hear you on the size. My understanding, however, having talked to the GEC people at the Tulsa Gun Show about this very barlow is that it was designed particularly in mind for people who work in places where there is a 3 inch limit on the length of knives, not on the blade, but on the closed length of the knives (apparently factories have such rules). I own my company and do not have such problems, but I can see how such a knife would perfectly fill the rule of a cutting tool for someone under such constrictions.

Mr.Manns & MercyfulfateXX, please see the dates on the previous posts, all in March and April 2011. :)
