Thanks, Steve.

rick if i understand the abalone they somehow separate the colored plates from the shell matrix & reassemble these scales into sheets. you are correct in seeing what is essentially a bunch of abalone flakes stabilized in the acrylic. i think on the black pearl we are actually getting one solid but very thin section of product.
dennis---maybe joebob or latham can add to our knowledge.

Hiya, Dennis. Regarding the abalone looking glass, I was referring to one or two perfectly straight fine horizontal and/or vertical seams in the abalone per scale where square pieces were patched together like a quilt. Almost every example I've seen on line seems to have 'em, whereas the pearl and black lip lamanants are continuous.

The abalone is a mosaic laminate vaneer; but I have seen a lot that had no noticeable seam ( but I see seams on Case and others paua and abalone as well ).

They paid quite a bit for sheets of the pearl / black lip that didn't have a lot of seams. And they sent quite a few back. But I don't really think the black lip is anything we better get accustomed to, we may have seen all of it we will see.

Thanks, Mike. The BLP really is impressive stuff. I was on the fence about it, but your "WOW, these are nice..." comment made me throw a leg over, and I'm glad I did.

rick thanks for helping me understand your comment on the abalone sheets, i guess i do'nt read carefully enough. i do appreciate you cogent restatement concerning the product.
