Geeky but legitimate cutlery question...

Does anybody know who makes the cutlery for Star Trek?

I guess most of the knives on there are Klingon, but I think there have been others.

I saw a "homemade" batleff (sp) at a gun show last week and one of the United Cutlery Phoenix (modeled after the Klingon daggers and allegedly called the "Bird of Prey" until a lawsuit injoined UC to change the name), but I wondered who made the real stuff you see on the show.

And why don't the away teams ever carry any knives or machetes or something?

Live long and prosper,

Clay (hanging his head in shame)

(This post was inspired by Mike Turber's using the term "decloak" in the lurker's thread)

Gil Hibben makes Klingon cutlery. He displayed them at the last New York Custom Knife show.

Thanks, Greg. Does he make the stuff on the show?

Is there anywhere on the web to see this stuff?

Thanks again,

Clay

Jan.issue of BLADE had a big article on Hibbens fantasy stuff and even shows Gil dressed as a Klingon showing various exotic weapons.

There are more sources. My daughter is a crafter, and at the craft shows she attends she has seen a person who makes up various 'Klingon' articles, including the big, bad one, whose name I forget. I can contact her and see if she can get in touch with him.

I missed the opportunity to ask Mr. Hibben whether or not he did make the blades for Star Trek. He had a Sword of Kahless on his table that looked awesome. Had what looked like a Damascus pattern on it. I'll check the January issue of Blade magazine tonight for more info.

I was suprised (to say the least) when I learned that Gil was a trekker (or trekkie, or whatever), but suprised in a good way. After all, what's cooler than knowing that your work is appearing on TV, etc.

Mike pointed out Gil's trademark leather pants in that picture with him as a Klingon, afterwords I was kicking myself for not recognizing him sooner.

Spark..

Trekkie is the proper term. Trekker refers to participants in the Boer (Afrikaner) migration as I recall.

World History for $800, Alex!

I remember seeing somewhere an add for someone on the west coast who made such things, your choice of stainless, tool steel or titanium. If I remember more I'll post
Aaron
ps let's split some hairs: the Dutch settlers were Afrikaans

DC, from what I heard these days, the ST fans like to be called trekkers because it doesn't sound as derogative as trekkies or something.

I could care less, it doesn't matter to me, I'll abide by their wishes either way.

Hey cool a question I really know a lot about!

First Gil has only made the knives for Star Trek recently. The knife you see on the TV show which is the Klingon War Dagger was not made by him. In fact it is not even a knife but a prop made by the propmaster for the set.

The first knife Gil made for Star Trek was a modified Raptor for Star Trek VI. It was carried by a female Klingon commander and had very limited screen time. Gil was on the set when the scene was filmed and he enjoyed the experience even though the screen time was not very good. The modified Raptor was essentially the same knife yet with Klingon markings. He made a few and they went for around $2,000 if memory serves.

Most of the knives he made was for "Star Trek: The Experience" which is a theme type ride and exhibit at the Las Vegas Hilton which is next to the convention center in LV. He made several knives but most notibly was a Batleth which is made of Damascus and is AWESOME!

I beleive this to be the one Gil made but the pic is not mine so I am not sure.

If you are in Las Vegas visit the exhibit whether a Trekkie or not. It is fun for all ages and Quark's bar is great. If you go order a Warp Core MeltDown and make sure you sit down.

I will see Gil next week and I will let you know more.

The batleth in the picture looks like it came from the Swordmark Company. Check out their Klingon weapons at: www.swordmark.com/aliensword.html

I also did a little digging and I found out who really makes the weapons for a bunch of the Star Trek series. His name is Dan Curry. Check out this web page (info, no pics

Thanks for all the input everyone!

One of these days I will pick up one of those United Phoenix daggers, but not while they are still around $50. If they get down to $20 or so, then maybe.

And I don't think my girlfriend would let me bring a bat'leth in the house.

Now can anyone tell me where to get a disruptor pistol?

Update on the Trekkie stuff!

The knife Gil made for Star Trek VI was a modified Raven, not Raptor, sorry my bad.

Also the Batleth was made of Stainless with a pattern of Damascus basically drawn on or etched. Hard to tell from any angle.
