  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Gem in a box.

I'm assuming that the thrift shop owner paid a buck or two for it and is happy with his margin. It's yours. That's why people go to thrift shops and flea markets.

It reminds me when one of my youger sons decided to have a garage sale. I told him that if he did all of the work, he kept all of the money.

When I came home later that Saturday, there was a guy (maybe it was you Robbie) jumping for joy in the driveway and another guy screaming at his wife for not having stopped at our place first (one of those neighborhood "Garage Sale" weekends). Asking my son what that was all about, he had sold a pair of $ 400 Bose speakers for $ 5. He thought that because there was no speaker wire attached to them, that they had gotten destroyed in a move and were useless.

I just sort of laughed it off and decided the next time my "entrepreneur" son organizes a sale, I'll get a little bit more involved.

A few years ago I was offered a rare Busse as a "second chance" on an E-Bay auction where the reserve was not reached and I was the high bidder.
I quickly accepted. It was such a steal, almost half of the real value, that I E-mailed the lady selling it, advised her that I felt I was stealing it, and offered to cancel the deal if she wished. To my amazement, she wanted to honor the deal.

I would say what and how much, but I'd hate to see grown Hogs cry.:D

Depends on my mood , most of the time I would buy it and not think a thing about it , on the rare occasion I was feeling "nice" I might offer the guy a few more bucks for it but I wouldnt sit and explain the invention of the wheel to him/her.

i may be wrong but i buy or used to buy a lot of things at auctions, flea markets and yard sales and i know for a fact that what u are using when u buy is your knowledge and u paid dear for that knowledge and somtimes u get paid back for your past mistakes. the fact that u passed by all those useless knives he had listed for 5 dollars and happened to find 1 worth a lot more was not due to luck by past experance and u paid dearly for that knowledge. the person who owned the box used his experance to price and put into the box what he thought was a good mark up for him and u just had more knowledge. don't worry u keep on going to flea markets and junk shops and ull sooner or later pay high for somthing cheap also.it all works out in the end.

If the guy's selling it for $5.00 then he might have paid $2.00 or $3.00 for it. The person who sold it to the thrift shop, if he was the true owner, would have known what it was worth. Therefore, the knife was probably stolen and dumped for a few bucks along with some other stolen property to buy a crack rock that went up in smoke in about 10 seconds. So, the person who was actually gypped was probably 2 owners back in the history of the knife. To really rack up the Karma points, buy the knife for $5.00 and try to find out who originally owned it, and give it back to him. :)

I don't feel guilty about paying what somebody is asking. That's part of the (well, pretty much all of) the fun at flea markets and auctions. You "think" you're getting a good deal but can't be sure.

Now, if the poor old Widow down the street showed up and asked me how much her husband's knife was worth and it was a Moran, I wouldn't cheat her, but that's a far different thing than paying what's asked by a person who is doing it for the money.

Well, If it was Robbie, From what I have gathered from our friendship, He pointed out the value to the owner, and paid the fair price, Now Me, Would have asked if "any" knife in the box was 5.00 and if so would have grabbed a cheapo to go with the BM and headed out the door. My Dad got a Spyderco Police at a garage sale for 5.00 one time, only thing there is that neither him or the guy that sold it knew what they had. LOL

Sorry for my late response,

Grampa, all the above "almost exactly" happened to me, :o I just wondered what everyone else would have done.

I am very happy with all the answers/advice I got on this thread.

Rroper1 was correct, I did give an estimate of value, but I also said I would only give so much, so I still got a deal, and they got more than they had marked.

I really appreciate all the comments. :D

Robbie Roberson. ;)
