To start with if im breaking any rules in this let me know and i will delete the post.

I am looking into a lot of Spyderco's knives and most of the ones i really like are discontinued. That being said they are hard to find and even hard to find at a good price. Sometimes Amazon has good stuff and eBay does as well (although I'm not sure if i should trust eBay).

I guess my question is where do you guys buy and what are some good ways to find deals?

It is ifficult to score a deal most times on any knife long discontinued. Typically, the person selling it knows they have something of value and will ask a price comesurate with the percieved value. I do not like buying from Amazon. There have been to many stories of a bad knife getting returned and reshelved, sent to someone else only to be returned and sold to yet another person.
Start a thread in the exchange, want to buy knives section. Explain what you want, and other terms that you are willing to accept. Tat is one way to have people offload knives they no longer want or need. As far as ebay, you need to read feedback and do your research. Some knives are just expensive, no way around it.

I buy discontinued and hard to find knives on Ebay. If the dealer has a high feedback score for knife related business then I won't have a problem trusting them. For current production stuff..... once I find what I want online, I check here for any information regarding that vendor.

Yep I'm realizing this, the knives I'm interested in right now are the bushcraft the phoenix and the lum tanto, all of them some what pricey. Do i have to be gold to use the exchange? although im planning on getting a gold membership i think my wife wants to get it as a gift for me soon so im holding off for a bit so i don't step on her toes (so to speak).

You don't have to be Gold/Platinum to post a WTB thread or to buy on the Exchange, but those upgraded membership levels are required to sell on the Exchange.

To answer the specific questions you asked in the original post, I've ordered quite a few Spydercos from Amazon and have never had any problems. (Just to be clear, I'm referring to items actually sold by Amazon [the company], not third-party sellers listing items on Amazon). Same thing goes for eBay. I've bought a handful of knives there (both from Spyderco and from other brands), and as long as you look at feedback and buy from reputable sellers, it's fine as a place to get knives.

Please read the rules posted at the top of the General Discussion forum. It really is for the discussion of knives rather than for the discussion of buying, selling, shipping and advice on where to buy what.

I've bought a bunch of knives on amazon and had no problems. Amazon is pretty easy about returns. You could also use a credit card that has some kind of satisfaction guarantee. I forget which ones have that but I believe some allow you to get a refund if you aren't satisfied with a product within a certain time frame.

My (admittedly juvenile) advice, is to just keep your eyes open. On the Exchange, for example, an M4 Manix 2 will come up for $150; eBay $200. The Lum Tanto is at Knifecenter right now for $167.

Hope this helps:)
