General, Frontiersman, and Scimitar blades

Just an observation on the various blade widths at the guard of different Buck FBs.

Aside from my Buck Strider (1-9/32" at the tang), the below are knives I would consider for my "one" camp knife in the fixed blade category.

Given the result of a recent batoning incident I read about here on the forum, I am wondering if the Scimitar should just be knocked out of the running.

Again, I am looking for a EDC/camper...not a trophy wife.
Your thoughts or proven experience is requested and valued.

Please consider each on what I would call the MESSY-METER for strength...

Width at the tang:

Scimitar 13/16"

Frontiersman 1.5"

General 1-1/32"

NightHawk 1-3/8"

.

For many years, my 119 served me well camping. For chopping firewood, I used a machete but for everything else the 119 was great. Including throwing it into a big tree we scribed a target into.

What specific activites do you intend to use the knife for?

Peter

I think Buckmaster 184 is ideal, but its collectible status puts it in a high price range for a camp knife, second choice would be a 124, maybe someones old user, to keep it under a $100.

yep knows onthe new one to a user
i bought a brand new one in the box !
was one of thoes with a hole and strations
that was made in 1970!
first thing i did was drop it on a concreat floor and
the supper sharp tip was NO more!!!
sad thing to happen to such a collectable knife
turned it in to a user like Right NOW..
oh well so it goes
and i paid a lot for it like almost a weeks pay!

Goose,
I'll second what Scott said! I'd get a well used 124 off ebay and make it really sharp. I think it would bethe superior camp knife due to its heft.

I'll third it! Especially with the older ones having the full tang and the 2 piece handle "inlays"!

I'll fourth Scott, wh4f and Mike! Get an older 124 "beater", and have it re-profiled like hkingdon's 124 w/120 profile! :)

well i think this would be a 'best' camp knife

but i can not aforde it and stay married so i made this and it works FAB!

Goose: I think blade thickness is as improtant as blade width at the tang in terms of a heavy duty camp knife. I may be wrong but I believe the Nighthawk is the thickest blade on your list at 0.235"

Once you pick your blade, send it to me for a thorough beating on the Messy Meter :D

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE KALINGA? too small?

I think the 401 would be pretty good, maybe a little short in the blade though. Should stand up to rough use pretty well. It has a thick backbone but a fairly thin edge, which would be good for dinner duty around camp.
If I had to pick just one, for every chore, it would probably be the 124.

This aint like the Highlander...

There CAN be more than one.... :D :D

one for the wife, one for the son in law, one for the grandkids, one for daughter,...

No,,,this one is mine,,,go get your own....

Goose,The only one from the group that i have is the 120.So I can

not speak for the others. But I still like my 120 for use at the camp.

Cutting up deer with. Cracking pecan's, stabbing beer can's.

general camp chores.
