General, Frontiersman, and Scimitar blades

JOE! you did not comment onmy first and only attempt to make a knife:mad: ,
and what a knife i thought it was :o
i can ssseee tt hat i will have to bring it to alanta .... :p

Well sorry about that Dave. The batteries in my 334dave decoder ring musta stopped working. :D I thought I could wing it.
I like the knife by the way, reminds me of one I know I saw somewhere and will try to get posted here. Did you do the grinding too?

yep start to finish as i got
i did it after i read of were HH showed AL how to do it..;)
had to try myself..
i did it in early 80's
and it had some hard use on the darriy farm i lived on in texas
and camping the few times i got to go ..:)
held up every bit as good as my 124 did:thumbup:
still my 124 is nicer looking:thumbup:
will try to not have to have every one use decoder ring every time:o

...But I still like my 120 for use at the camp.

Cutting up deer with. Cracking pecan's, stabbing beer can's.

general camp chores.

Jeff

Thanks for all the great replies.

Well, Peter, et al...What do I plan to do with it?
Like Jeffey (I love that movie..."The Ringer") said...all the general camp chores 'cept I don't hunt. But, the knife would be used for chow prep, fire wood kindling, stabbing beer cans in the fire, roasting vienna sausages and marshmallows, slcing Spam, picking things up outta the coals, cutting other peep's tent lines, throwing at squirrels, mumbly peg...all the stuff I learned while earning Eagle Scout.

I have given sirus thought about a Kalinga 408 S30V, but it's too short for me to poke into the fire. Can't find one in stock anywhere anyway :( :( :( :(

The Scimitar, I'm concerned it would break at the tang.

NightHawk, is near the top for me as a camp knife. I would chose it over a 119. The ONLY thing that concerns me about it (aside from the MESSY METER test results) is that rubber handle pulling off. This would be similar to problems I have heard regarding the 619 that I have (though mine is still intact). Especially if exposed to fire water (stove/lighter fluid) or insect sprays...in other words, the adhesive's chemical reaction with vapors or liquids that it may come in contact with over time.

So, for me, it is a toss up between the General and the Frontiersman. I love the 120BP Pro-Line that I have. Though I have a 124 trophy wife, I have never used one. The diff is only about 5/16" in length of the actual blade on mine. The 120 being longer. Depending on your gender, I don't know if less than half an inch makes a difference.

So, until I get a EDC 124, I guess I'm gonna stick with the 120 for camping, a 889SBMF in the hip pocket, and a 110 BG-42 horizontal carry on the belt.

Thanks again!!!

OK...I have a question.
I had a micarta 110 back in the day. Who knows where it is.

Everything I read about the Scimitar that I have says it is micarta. Joe says it is micarta. But, to me, the one I have looks phenolic. Just like my 119 and 120 handles of recent mfg.

Here's the question:
With my micarta 110 MIA to compare, how can one tell the diff between the two (micarta and phenolic)?
Or, is it the same? I have read where phenolic can be layered...isn't that the same as the process for micarta?

So, that makes it two questions.

And, NO John, I am not going to burn it then smell it :)

Looking at micarta under a magnifier or loupe, it has a linen weave effect. Phenolic is smooth plastic looking.

Similar to the linen effect on some of the 300 series, but I think micarta is a finer weave.

Least thats what I see on this micarta Kalinga.

Just dug out the micarta 112 and it has the same effect as the kalinga.. Phenolic is usually shiny,, I don't think micarta is. But mine may just be old.

I think the binder used in Micarta is phenolic. Pure phenolic would lack the linen or canvas used to reinforce the Micarta. By the way, Micarta is a trade name like Formica. I don't know what the generic name for Micarta is but it might be something like linen reinforced phenolic.

I think either the General or Frontiersman would suit your needs just fine. I have one Frontiersman but have not used it. A buddy had the General and while it is better than a 119 (which I used excessively) for chopping, the 119 was better for things like cutting up food, whittling sticks to cook food, etc.

The longer blade on the General made it less manuverable than the 119. The Kalinga and Akonua are awesome knives but more suited for skinning type chores than general camp use. Just my $.02 FWIW.

Peter

UPDATE:
Ended up getting a NIB w/ papers 1986 124.
Now you know the dilemma. It's NIB. But, since I only collect 110/2 ;) it most likely will be a user.

Thanks to all for their comments/opinions.
