(Moderators: I may have overdone it a little with the pics, if so, let me know and I'll delete the unrelated pics in my last two postings.
I know you guys like pictures, so I thought I'd share some of my recent time spent entertaining the in-laws. My wife's family came to visit California for the first time from Ohio. (lol what a coincidence, I just realized "my city was gone" by the pretenders was playing as I type this)

Anyways, so we spent the week showing them the sites. We stayed at my Grandfathers beach house in Aptos, and we took them to San Francisco, Monterey/Carmel, Giant forest, and Santa Cruz.

The highlight for my father in-law was Giant Forest seeing the Sequoias, and the General Sherman tree, supposedly the largest living organism on earth. He's a sawer, and is really into trees; I think he thinks about how much board feet he could get out of them. After we saw General Sherman, we decided to hike one of the local trails, well, we got out, and looked at the trail map to decide which way we wanted to go, then I turn around, and there is mister black bear about 10 feet from us. An expletive, got everyone to turn around and meet Mr. bear. At first he seemed to be catching the scent of my mother in-laws granola bar, but after we slowly walked back to the car, he went back to his own business, and kinda just moseyed along.

So without further adieu:

Me, father in-law, brother in-law, and General Sherman. Man what a massive tree!

This is what happens when you let your father in-law climb a tree. Brother in-law had to catch him...

And... Mr. Black Bear. Pictures taken after we started walking away and don't do justice to how close we were to him.

The knives I had on hand were my LM Wave, and my Mora #510. They didn't et a whole lot of use. I used the Wave to make a primitive walking stick for my mother in-law, basically a nice strait limb about 4' long and 4" or so in diameter. I rounded the ends for a comfortable grip and left the bark on, since it was a nice flat, smoothish, white bark, that was also pretty thin. The Mora and the LM got lunch duty and cut up a lot of Sharp Cheddar and Summer Sausage, stacked on top of a Ritz, YUMMM!!!!
Sorry, no action shots though, and I didn't think to take a pic of the walking stick.

Great pictures! Thanks for that. Will never get to California so this is the next best thing.

Doc

Great pics, stingray. We were out there some years back, and we made a promise if ever we get that winning lotto ticket we're moving to Carmel. Loved and were captivated by the place!

Great pics, thanks for sharing. Next time could you get a close up of the bear? :D The cement ship is just a few miles from my house.

This brings back memories. I took a tour of Alcatraz, visited Carmel and stayed in Big Sir. A very memorable trip made all the better by it being nice and warm. And those silver robot guys at the docks in San Francisco are pretty cool too :D .

Thanks guys! I'm glad I could share them.

Nick-Nack: Yah, it's a pretty good name to have, you're a lucky guy;)

Doc-Canada - Well, if you ever do, look me up.

Jackknife: Yes Carmel is wonderful, it is my dream to retire there. What an absolutely beautiful place.

tknife: My dad has been camping not far from that area since his pre-teens, and I have since before i was born, and this was the first time either of us has seen a bear.

2dogs: Next time I'll take a picture of me hugging it, would you like that? A couple miles north or south? You are talking about the cement ship at New Brighton State Beach right? Because I think it's sister ship is docked somewhere else, but not sure were.

RubberJohnny: No silver robot, but there was a copper robot...

LOL!!

great pics...I miss the west coast! :(

I live in Santa Cruz. My parents used to go dancing at the nightclub and restaurant on the ship. I live about 2 miles from Natural Bridges State Park too.

oh, cool. We go to Santa Cruz a lot when we stay at my grandfathers beach house. This summer my wife and I took a bike ride from the boardwalk to Natural Bridges. It's a nice leisurely, scenic ride.

great pics... :thumbup:some of those areas look awefully familiar...:o i love those redwoods, that's what it looks like across the street from my house....:D

Lived in Salinas from 83 to 86. Use to go to Carmel all the time as my Mom worked for a paper called "Coasting". Bought my 1st Spyderco in Carmel too. Great place, but the cost of living & unfriendly firearm laws would keep me from moving back.

That's a nice healthy looking bear, ready for the winter. I saw one once on the Congress trail near General Sherman, it was tearing apart some logs.

It's time for me to get back up there, it has been six months at least. In the summer I always go to the high country, and in the late fall through early spring, when the high country is inaccessible, I go to Giant Forest. Winter is by far the best time to go to Giant Forest.

I was thinking about going to Mineral King yesterday, but the gate is already locked even though there isn't any snow there (except after tonight there probably will be).
