General utility/beach/woods bumming knife

You should really check out the Mora Forest or Force (see 'Bubba's post above). I have one of each as well as 4 clippers.

I've debated it. I really like the handles on the clippers better. I've had other Mora's with the same handles as the Bushcraft line and just like the round clipper handle the best.

Give me the clipper handle, blade length and width of the Bushcraft line and make them 1/8" thick and I'll buy them all day long.

I recomend spyderco salt knife. Won't rust. As to the side note, the gerber profile is a great knife, a good user. It would most likely rust if put in salt water.

Another vote for the Mora. IMO, probably the best general purpose fixed blade option in the $15 - $50 range.

Thanks for all the replies so far! Spring time is a ways off so I have a good bit of time to decide (though I'll prolly buy post-christmas for savings or maybe find a deal on the for sale section).

The main uses I will have for this knife are light duty utility cutting (of which I consider feather sticks), some possible skinning and processing of small game like rabbits, gutting fish and also as a "dive knife" for snorkeling and spear fishing. While I'm not planning on stabbing a shark or anything ridiculous I figure the LAST place you'd not wana be without a knife when you need it is under water. Now I know I could just get a cheap dive knife and call it a day but I'd rather only have to carry one extra knife along with me. I'm already gonna be taking a hatchet for wood work, thus I would prefer a thinner knife, about 4.5"-5.5" blade. Ideally what would be perfect is like a stainless Airforce Survival Knife like Ontario makes but stainless. Not the toughest work, I wouldn't mind a good 440a knife however I'm not sure who gives 440a a good HT and rough rider doesn't make what I'm looking for and I don't wana just throw my money away on junk.

So far a reground Mora is looking like the best choice! But I'd still like some other recommendations if anyone has one :)

Have you considered a Caspian Salt by Spyderco? It's designed as a dive/water sports knife, but should handle all that you listed.

Mmmm, a little out of the price range I was looking for. If I were to spend that much I'd just save a bit more and go with a bark river and a cheapo dive knife :D

I happen to have a Condor tab open at MS, and saw this:

I don't have one, but some BF veterans say the Condor stainless works well. Just a thought.

EDIT: I missed your last post Javelin, so i think my suggestion is not a good one.

However you may be on to something. I know Condor makes good stainless machetes and good carbon steel knives but do they make good stainless knives? I see that the lifeland hunter is stainless...

@bladerique - Blade length is 4.5". Probably not the best choice if you want to baton a lot. But for something you might use for fishing & diving, I think it would work well.

@Javelin - The knife dealer that I would purchase from is selling them for $64.75. If you can get a Bark River + dive knife for that, I'd say go for it.

Maybe if I could handle it myself... otherwise that is the wonkiest blade design I've seen save for the blade forearm shark thing.

How about the USN Mark III. Ontario make one in 440A http://www.ontarioknife.com/catalog/item/9
440A from Ka-Bar, SOG, Kershaw, Cold Steel, Ontario is very good.

This looks good, but I think my final verdict is gonna be the lifeland hunter plus a mora backup. I originally thought this would be an easier endeavor, cheap stainless survival style knives I thought would be more popular. It seems like every one wants to make either the most gimmicky design or a massive bowie with a foot long blade and little between. Thanks for your replies!
