I was concerned about the ivory grain, too. The first 2 or 3 handles I made for this piece had much more subdued grain & probably would have looked better, if I hadn't ruined them. foot::grumpy Like I said, this one just didn't want to get done.
I think it looks damn nice. I love long bladed Bowies. Now, does it cut?
The "only" thing I would change, and it is just my personal preference, would be a longer "Bagwellian" style clip.
It is heat treated, but I don't have the tools or experience to really do a good job at it. Just did it with a torch, then tempered to a straw color. The final edge was the thickness of a piece of paper before sharpening, so it should be thin enough for good cutting. Right now it just has a 1000 grit edge though- may bring it up to scary sharp yet.
I have a feeling you'd prefer the blade styles I normally do on my Sheffield-inspired stuff. This one is a bit more modern looking to me, but on my little English ones I make the tip more pointy, usually a little less belly, with the point centered a bit lower, longer clip, wider false edge grind, and usually the false edge also extends behind the clip a ways. So yeah, I can totally understand where you're comin' from.
Great job, Possum... I thought it was a full size with a big 15"ish blade. Would love to see what Mr. Long can make for it with the appropriate "mini" thread. You might end up owing him the knife for the sheathwork though...
