A while back I was approached by a member here on the forums who I've known for some time due to our mutual interest in collecting certain factory knives. This BF member is a steel junkie of the worst kind, loves exotic stuff and enjoys using and testing blades made from quality material. I got a message from him a while back saying he'd been watching my progress as a maker and wanted to make a donation to my shop in the form of some good steel. I was thrilled to say the least.

These two sheets are part of some samples he received from the good folks at Niagra. The larger sheet is CPM S30V and measures 24" x 6" and the smaller sheet is CPM D2 and measures 24" x 5". Both sheets are in the neighborhood of .150" thick. I'll be able to get a decent amount of blades out of these two pieces. Just wanted to share because this was very cool on his part and totally selfless. Nice to know that there are still folks around with this type of generosity. Very cool.

Being a steel junkie, he's discussed the possibility of working with me on some projects with both M3 and 15V......so we'll see what happens.

Thanks Joe!;)

If you haven't worked with the CPM D2 yet, you'll love it. The S30V, maybe not so much. ;) :)

Jonny, that's very cool. I don't find it that surprising however. You treat people with respect and people want to show you respect back. Good on you, brother.

Are those stacked sandpaper file cubbys?

Yep!:D A tray for every grit and a grit for every tray. They're letter trays from staples and they work great!

Danbo, I have a bunch of blades profiled from some CPM-D2 that I got from Aldo but haven't ground any yet. You know how much I love D2 so I'm looking forward to it.

Michael, thanks buddy!

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy :)

Your love affair with regular D2 is about to end. Once you see how nicely the CPM version grinds and polishes, you won't want to settle for less.

+1, Jon, maybe it's spreading. Last night a maker who I have only met in person twice gifted my son a knife. I was ribbing him on Facebook because my son (6 at the time) saw the knife at our first show and cried when we left without buying it. Robert Scheppmann told me not to worry, because he had pulled the knife and it was a gift for my son. Unbelievable.

Very cool Erik!
I know Robert through Facebook and knife making. He's always seemed like a really good guy, and this confirms it.

I must have done something right (in another life) - a kick ass knife maker and forum friend sent me this and three blocks of stabilized maple. I didn't have a bandsaw and was going to buy a portable. This one won't take a Swag Off Road table so I made the mount and will make a table. Pretty damn cool.

Cool!

I'm thinking 2 massive cleavers would really make the most of the steel! ;) :D

Damn Jonny, score! Those are a couple nice pieces 'o steel! Incidentally, I do the same thing with my sandpaper. Works great. Do you cut 'em up with a paper shear table like I do, too?

About generosity, I've received some very cool things lately from generous people as well. Including a 400 yr. old katana! It needed a little help, is all.

Hey Salem,
Most of those are full sheets in the letter trays, I usually tear them on an edge of the work bench and it works fine. The 1/3 sheets in the one tray on the left are a bunch 80 and 50 grit black zirc sheets that I got for a steal at Supergrit. They came that size. The 50 grit is perfect for getting good deep scratches when roughing up tangs and handle slabs for glue up.

Would love to see pics of the Katana someday!

I will post pics of that katana soon. It's soon to be the centerpiece of my bladesmithing shrine, every morning before walking into the shop I can pause a moment before it to gain inspiration from the spirit of Kanenori.
