I would be fine with a kit knife. I have made a knife in the past, but after spending 30 hours on it, the last thing I wanted to do was use it every day! If I had a proper-looking sheath, I might, though.... any good ideas of sheath makers?

I am of the other mind set , after spending 30 hours on it , I dont want it sitting around not getting used :)

Use it after you make it , have total pride in knowing you finished it and are now putting it to work.

Pocketknives are too easily lost, even those with a clip work out of my jeans, or get rubbed out. Or I lose it..... ;) With a sheath knife, it would be less likely to get lost.
Maybe I don't know the definition of "gentleman's knife", but I don't see jeans being part of that definition. Every knife I've ever seen classified as "gentleman's" is small knife that wouldn't be noticed in a gentleman's suit pocket or evening dress. It isn't a working knife, but something for small emergencies. Because it goes with dress clothes rather than casual clothes, it is fancier and sometimes to the point of being jewelry - if we would admit to such a thing.

Wanting a small, easily hidden fixed blade knife is just fine. Don't call it a gentleman's knife though.

Go to the knifemakers for sale page on this forum, you can find some very nice looking stuff around your price range.
