Gentleman's Folder as a Gift

Hi guys/gals. I'm looking for a suggestion to a nice gentleman's folder for a gift to my father. His b-day is coming up and I want to get him something different this year, plus it seems like he has everything already ya know...

I was thinking of a classic style slippy maybe. Since I don't know much about the classic slip joints I'm open for suggestions. One thing I know is that he really isn't into stag/bone handle scales and would prefer wood.

I'd like to keep the price under $150.00, but still get a decent/good blade steel and durability.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about slips, so my suggestions would be a Benchmade Opportunist or Fallkniven U2.

Take a look in the "Makers" forum under "Folders For Sale". Lots of beautiful slippies there. Or try "Tidioute" Or "GEC" (Great Eastern Cutlery).

It doesn't have to be a slippy, it just have to be classy. I recommend Mcusta Gentlemen's Folder with Cocobolo handle. It has a Japanese-made VG10-based damascus blade that's beautiful, durable, and shaving sharp. The price fits your range nicely.

Those look great, I'll definitely consider JKD. Just to clarify from what I read. They ship from Japan to SD, Cali; then to final destination, like say Canada?

I'd suggest Alsdorf, but that means you have to spend more. They are reaaaaaaaally that nice. It'd be worth it IMO. They're around 250-270. I'd specifically look at the doctor slippies. Doctor is a style.

Moki from Seki City Japan makes some gorgeous gentlemen's knives. The fit and finish is top of the line and as good as any production knife you'll find. The Moki Lockback with Black Micarta inlaid w/green sea snail is a particular favorite of mine. You can find them at knifeworks.com in your price range. (btw, the picture doesn't do the knife justice)

Check out the Fallkniven folders (U1 for slippy, HK9 for a lockback, etc...) they are pretty nice, great steel and very gentlemanly.

Mcusta is carried by most major online knife retailers. I pick that site simply because they have the nicest pictures. You can buy the very same knife from gpknives.com in Illinois who has experience in shipping to Canada. They will even tighten the pivot screw of any knife shipped to Canada, to make sure that your Customs don't consider it a gravity knife and confiscate it.

I bought from them, and the service was satisfactory.

Do your self favor and go look in the Makers section here. We have some fantastic talent here. You owe it to yourself to check out Mike Alsdorf!!!

I thoroughly recommend the Kershaw Nakamura.

Beautiful knife; it is modern but classy and traditional at the same time. VG10 core with 420J2 outer layers.

Mick R, could you take some better pictures of that knife, please? I'm also looking for a gentleman's folder for my dad's forthcoming birthday; he will turn 64. I'm really liking that knife, but I'd like more pictures so I can tell the fit and finish. I'd greatly appreciate it. You could post here, or perhaps email me: harkamus at mindspring dot com <---damn spam bots.

If it's a burden, I understand. No worries.

Unfortunately I gave the knife to my father in law as a retirement gift so I no longer have it. I did find some better pics online I'll post for you. Moki is a highly respected 100 year old company and every knife I've seen from them has had a flawless fit and finish.

Excellent, now I just need to decide which variation of it fits my dad the best.

EDIT: Made in Japan, right?

If you look around you can find good quality slipjoints that probably meet your requirements - look at Great Eastern, Canal Street, Queen.

If you are willing to look at more modern styles, the Benchmade 440 Opportunist is a very nice high quality gents knife. And the higher end Moki knives are flawless - amazing fit and finish.
